The Transmigration Missions Are Not Scientific Ch.1

Chapter 1: System?!

“Anran, Anran! Wake up!” 

Gu Anran heard a familiar voice speak into her ear as she felt someone shaking her awake. Opening her somewhat dried eyes, she groaned as she clutched her aching head. 

“Hong Qingyi, what are you doing? Don’t you know I haven’t slept for three days?!”

Hong Qingyi crossed her arms and hummed in response, 

“Tch, if it wasn’t because something happened, you think I would willingly wake you up!” 

Gu Anran looked up, her eyes still had a hint of drowsiness as she looked around in confusion…

“Where..are we?” 

“Who knows.” Hong Qingyi curled her lips. 

Currently, they were sitting in a completely white and empty room. There were no furniture, no windows, no doors, nothing at all! If one swiped their fingers across the floor..wow! There wasn’t even a speck of dust! It couldn’t be that they were in some kind of completely sterile quarantine room, right?!

“Welcome to the system’s room.” A slightly childish female voice called out. 

…System?

“Oh wow…the acting is really good!” Gu Anran said sarcastically as she shrugged her shoulders with indifference. Who did this “system” that came out of nowhere, think they were fooling? Did they think everyone was stupid or something? 

“What acting! This is real!” The female cried angrily. 

“Yes, yes, now may I trouble the system to send us back please.” Hong Qingyi lazily laid on the ground, not a hint of concern on her face. Like Gu Anran, she seemed to think this was a prank or hidden camera prank. 

“T-This I cannot do! You must complete the missions and only when you finish them can you return to your original world…”

“And if we don’t finish them, we will be exterminated. Such cliche lines, can’t you think of something better?” Gu Anran complained as she clutched her head. 

“Waaaa! How can you say that! This was picked by the settings! It’s not like I wanted to say all that! You’re a bully! You’re bullying me!” The system started crying in an aggrieved tone.

“You made it cry.” Hong Qingyi motioned towards the voice, and as if it was confirming Hong Qingyi’s words, the self-proclaimed system’s cries increased in volume and continued to rise. 

A machine that can cry…what do I say to that? At this point it isn’t even a sound effect anymore, it’s just annoying! Hey, where is the producer? I want to complain! Hurry up and fix this damn thing already!

“Enough…whatever you have to say, just say it. All this noise is giving me a headache.” Gu Anran said with a grimace.

“Then will the two players please draw lots.” The voice immediately returned to being excited again. That was quick…what a two-faced person, no …a two-faced system… 

Before the two of them appeared a…japanese-styled lottery wheel? The kind where you turn a handle and a ball falls out…

“What are we drawing lots for?” Gu Anran asked, raising an eyebrow. 

“We’re drawing lots for the two players’ main storyline! Also known as the main missions the players need to complete to move on to the next world. Rest assured, this system will never force the two players, besides ensuring the players take on the missions, all other details will be decided through drawing lots! Now, this first draw will be deciding the player’s capture target!” 

Wow, isn’t that nice of you…but how are you not forcing us? Didn’t you bring us here without our consent? Gu Anran grumbled in her heart. 

“So, what do we do?” Hong Qingyi asked with her arms crossed. 

“What else can we do? We can only go along for now…” Gu Anran turned the handle and a golden ball fell out. Picking it up, Gu Anran could only see the character for “female” on the surface. What did this mean? Was there a puzzle she had to solve as well? 

Ding! Ding! Ding!….the ringing of a bell sounded: 

“ Congratulations to our first guest! This player has drawn the capture target, ‘Female Lead’, congratulations~~~” 

WTF?!?!?!?!?!

“Hey, hey, are you messing with me?! I am a woman, so why must I attack and capture the female lead?!” Gu Anran shouted in disbelief. 

“Hmm..I did previously mention that all the details will be decided by the player, so there is no unfairness involved!” The system answered back seriously. 

I-I…I have nothing to say!!!! Now it was Gu Anran who felt aggrieved! 

Hong Qingyi comforted Gu Anran by patting her on the shoulder, then started to turn the handle as well.

Clank …a red ball fell out and on the surface…also had the character for “female”….she had a strong feeling of anxiety….

And the bell sounded again,

“Congratulations to our second guest for winning our second place prize! This player has drawn the capture target, ‘Supporting Female Lead’ , congratulations~~~” 

“Don’t tell me that inside this lottery wheel…are all female characters?!” This time even Hong Qingyi’s expression changed, her voice full of doubt. 

It was reasonable to say that the chances of getting either a man or female character was the same but why were only women drawn? This was not scientific! 

“This system would never do something that bad! If you don’t believe me, open it up and see for yourself!” The system said proudly. 

Gu Anran and Hong Qingyi opened up the lottery wheel and saw that in addition to the balls they picked, there was one golden ball with the “male” character written on it, two black ones with “male” and “female” written respectively on each, and numerous mix of “male” and “female” gray balls. 

“See, what did this system say? The lottery is not unfair! Gold represents the male and female leads, red represents the supporting leads, black the villains, and finally gray are the cannon fodder! You two were very lucky to have drawn the main characters for this world. You should feel happy, if you had drawn the cannon fodder it would have been too pitiful.” The system sighed. 

Gu Anran and Hong Qingyi turned and looked at each other… 

Should we feel happy? Should we?! No, we shouldn’t! True, picking cannon fodder would have been pathetic, but was picking someone of the same sex any better?!

“Alright, the next lottery will decide your missions! For this one, please press the button, and whatever it lands on will be the player’s mission!” The system completely ignored the two silent and gloomy players, still engrossed in the task at hand.

A flashing screen appeared and a red button below it. 

Gu Anran softly pressed it….

Ding~~The flashing screen stopped and the mission it showed was….

“Bend…the male lead…” Gu Anran’s lips twitched, this system was beyond saving! [1] 

On the other side, Hng Qingyi also pressed the red button, a few characters flashed by and when it stopped, the mission only had a one word difference from Gu Anran’s…

「Bend the supporting male lead.」

“…..”

 Just what exactly does this transmigration system want!!?? Gu Anran held her head and howled silently in grief. 

“So…I guess it’ll be best if we get the two of them together.” Hong Qingyi’s expression was unreadable. 

“That’s a good idea, worthy enough for consideration.” Gu Anran nodded seriously. 

“Really? You’re not kidding, right?” Hong Qingyi’s eyes widened. 

“What other options do we have? If we just find some random passerby, that’ll be too tragic!” 

“….Ok.” 

“Alright! This is the last lottery~ This time it will be a shared mission between the two of you, will the two players please draw one last time~” 

….Why did they feel this system was quite evil? 

Again, Gu Anran and Hong Qingyi looked at one another, their expressions filled with reluctance. 

“Rock-paper-scissors.” 

“You’re on.” 

In the end, Gu Anran stepped forward and pressed the button, feeling quite humiliated. However, when she saw the quest, she was moved to tears! On the screen it read:

「Defeat the male and female villain leads」

Such a rare and hard to come by “normal” mission had finally appeared! 

Out of five different draws, only this one was normal! They could only lament that their luck was extremely bad! 

“Alright, now that the lotteries have finished, let me explain the rest, my dear players. In addition to the main storyline’s mission I will assign side missions, some will be optional, some mandatory. Once a side mission is completed, the player will be awarded points they can use in the system’s store to buy any necessary items. Do the players have any questions?” 

Gu Anran and Hong Qingyi both shook their heads, 

“Then I ask the two players to please read over your status windows, and wait while I finish inputting the details. The transmigration will begin in approximately three minutes.” Saying so, the system displayed two blocks of texts on the wall. 

Gu Anran: “…..”

Hong Qingyi: “…..” 

This status window really is too simple…

Anyhow, Gu Anran already knew that she and Hong Qingyi’s intelligence was on the higher end, but didn’t expect it to be that high. As for the physical strength portion, what did you expect from two nerds who stay inside all day? Haha, it was already impressive enough that they weren’t sick or fainting. 

As the two stood speechless in front of their data, the system began its countdown. 

“Transmigration is about to begin, starting countdown. 5…4…3…2…1…”

Gu Anran only felt that she was free falling before the world around her went dark.

Some terms you might not know: 

Players: in this case, it actually can be translated as “host” like the person “hosting” the system. However, I liked the word “player” better because I think it’ll make more sense to an English speaking audience. Nightcrypt, my sometimes editor, agreed that she liked “player” more than “hosts.” So yea that’s what it’s gonna be from now on, but if you disagree, please tell me!

Capture Targets: The person that Anran and Qingyi are attack and make them “fall in love” with the “player”. Think otome games like mystic messenger where your mission is to make someone like you (aka that is your capture target)!
