Chapter 3: Campus novel (2)

Gu Anran was currently in a bad mood, no…it was beyond bad at this point, it was on the verge of exploding. 

Gu Anran’s real age was eighteen and previously she was in that summer period of when students apply for college. It was also the longest summer vacation period as well. So the Gu Anran who was used to sleeping late and waking up late, was forced to go to school at seven in the morning like a regular high school student all over again. It was so torturous that she couldn’t even bother getting upset. She only had enough strength to make a dark expression and then sluggishly boarded her family’s car. 

“Anran…good morning….” An equally exhausted Hong Qinyi stood in front of the school gates and weakly greeted Gu Anran who stepped out of the car. 

“En….” Gu Anran rubbed at her dry eyes, and drank a big mouthful of her chocolate milk. She originally preferred to drink coffee, and was like an addict, she couldn’t live without coffee. However, this body’s mother refused to let her drink it, stating that coffee was harmful to the body and only allowed her to drink milk. Drinking milk…is good an all, but the original owner liked to drink strawberry milk and Gu Anran hated strawberry flavored anything. She hated it so much that she ended up arguing with Wang Qinghua (her dear mother) for a long time, which ended up making her feel more exhausted…

“Anran, don’t tell me that bulging backpack of yours is just filled with that kind of stuff.” Hong Qingyi said while taking a bite out of her bread. 

“Of course not, I also brought a lot of peppermints. Do you want some?” As Anran said that, she opened up her backpack and shoved a fistful of peppermints at Hong Qingyi.

“Thanks, here, I brought some coffee candies with me.” Hong Qingyi acted like she was trading with Gu Anran and dumped a bunch into Gu Anran’s backpack. 

The two of them were acting like two mentally ill patients…but it was the system’s fault for assigning annoying missions. 

Earlier this morning:

「Side mission (mandatory): Please be a good student. Do not sleep or play video games in class, so players can make a good first impression with the capture targets.」

They had both finally passed through the most painful parts of high school, but now they had to go through it once more. Wouldn’t that just make anyone miserable? Furthermore, when Gu Anran saw that they couldn’t sleep or play video games in class she almost vomited blood. So in a state of drowsiness and confusion, she grabbed a large bag of peppermints and a few bottles of chocolate milk. 

By the time the two of them walked into the classroom, most of the students had arrived. Majority of them were familiar with one another, because after all, if their parents hadn’t done business together than they served in the army together, or did politics with one another. Their parents may each have different positions, but overall they all roughly belonged to the same group, the only discernible difference was rather that some families were somewhat familiar or extremely familiar. 

Gu Anran remembered that the male lead and supporting male lead were in their class, however since the system hadn’t given them any prompts as of now, most likely the two hadn’t arrived yet.

Gu Anran walked to the back row and sat down in one of the desks. Hong Qinyi sat in the column of desks next to her, they were only separated by one aisle, making it convenient for the two to talk with one another. 

Suddenly, a girl wearing a red dress and strong makeup entered the classroom. She had an arrogant look on her face as she surveyed the room before she sat down in an area not far from Gu Anran. Behind her were a crowd of female and male students that praised and flattered her every move.

「Please pay attention. The female villain lead, Shangguan Qing, has appeared. 」 

The system’s voice sounded through their heads. 

Gu Anran and Hong Qingyi glanced at each other simultaneously. It seems they had both heard the system’s warning. 

The two’s third main mission was to defeat and bring down the male and female villain leads. Shangguan Qing is the female villain lead in question, and is the shrewish fiancee of the male villain lead. 

“That thick makeup of hers is really ugly, even I can apply it several times better than her.” Hong Qingyi looked over at Shangguan Qing’s face, which was closer to a color palette than a face, with obvious dislike. Was the female villain lead so upset or something that she messed up her own face?

“Just say what you’re thinking outright.  Don’t you think that face and that red dress she wore would fit in perfectly with the actors at the Beijing Opera?” Gu Anran said. Although this school provided uniforms, but not everyone would wear it. Besides, everyone’s background weren’t small, so the school staff couldn’t say anything. 

“Keuk!” Hong Qingyi choked on the milk, laughing. She had been drinking when she heard Gu Anran’s words, so this caused her to spill everywhere. Gu Anran impatiently took the bottle out of Hong Qingyi’s hands. 

Knock. Knock. 

The teacher at the door knocked twice gently, and walked in. The chatting students all slowly made there way to the seats, but as Gu Anran swept a look across the room, she noticed that at least one-third of the students still hadn’t arrived. This high school really gave their students too much “freedom.”

“Ahem…Attention class, now I will introduce our two new students, Mu Qingli and Chi Mengyan.” As he said so, the two girls walked in. 

「Please pay attention. The two players’ capture targets have appeared.」The system’s voice announced.

“Hello everyone, my name is Mu Qingli! I hope we can all get along together,” said the bright-eyed girl. Looking at her delicate facial features, paired with a sweet smile and curvaceous figure, it was no wonder she was bullied! A beauty of the highest quality!

“Congrats!” Hong Qingyi patted Gu Anran’s shoulder with a smirk. 

“Fu*k off! Go worry about your own situation!” Gu Anran yelled. Would she ever admit the beauty’s appearance had shook her to the core? No way!

“Hello everyone, my name is Chi Mengyan. Please take care of me.” The other delicate and pretty girl girl nodded her head towards everyone. This one seemed like the quiet type. They looked like they pair well together, don’t they?

However, the female lead’s appearance was already having an effect. If Shangguan Qing and the other girls were already gritting their teeth, their eyes filled with jealousy, then there was no need to mention the lovesick males in their class.

“Mu Qingli, you’ll sit in the empty seat next to Gu Anran over there and Chi Mengyan, you’ll sit next to Hong Qingyi.” The teacher instructed them. 

Wait! Isn’t this a little too fast! I’m not ready yet! Gu Anran had froze immediately. 

「Side mission (mandatory): Before the class ends, give a peppermint to the female lead. The player may not act in neither a cold nor cheerful manner when completing the task.」

Hey, hey, hey! What kind of damned mission is this! Weren’t we supposed to go on an all-out attack? Gu Anran was confused by the second sentence of the mission. 

However the lost in her thoughts Gu Anran, didn’t notice the female lead had walked up and extended a hand out to her in a friendly manner. 

“Hello, I’m your deskmate from now on, Mu Qingli. Please take care of me.” She held out her hands for a few seconds towards the cold faced (confused) individual, but was promptly ignored. Feeling quite embarrassed, Mu Qingli, retracted her hand, prompting the girls to mockingly laugh at her. 

Huh? The Gu Anran who had returned to reality, looked around the room filled with laughter. Wha! When did the female lead arrive, wait…omg! Will she hate me now?!

「Player’s current favorability rating: (5). Rest assured, dear player, the female lead is not a petty one. 」The system comforted her. 

Should I be happy? I had already made a bad first impression with the female lead! Gu Anran was feeling quite anxious. 

Oh, right! Gu Anran suddenly remembered something, grabbed a few peppermints and stuffed them into the female lead’s hands. 

Mu Qingli was feeling quite dismayed by her deskmate’s cold indifference, but suddenly felt a pair of hands under the desk stuff something into her own hand. She looked down to see …peppermints?

She looked up in surprise at her deskmate only to find that the other was focused on listening to the teacher’s lecture, well that’s what it’ll look like if you ignored the slightly blushing ears….unexpectedly this deskmate of hers was somewhat interesting!

Mu Qingli thought this with a smile and unwrapped a piece to put in her mouth. Hmm…it tasted nice and cool. 

「Side mission complete, 200 points will be rewarded. Female lead’s favorability rating has gone up by five and is now at (10). May the player please continue to work hard.」

Ah? That’s all it takes?! This is quite easy! Gu Anran thought, but the system continued,

「May the player remember that this is the simplest mission. In the future, the missions will only get harder …」

“…..” Can’t you let me be happy for a moment!
