Received A Wife From The Civil Affairs Bureau Ch.5

Shen Yumo felt a gaze on her and looked over, her eyes coincidentally meeting Jiang Ziquan’s.

Noticing this, Jiang Ziquan quickly flashed a big smile and Shen Yumo nodded slightly. Just this simple communication between the two made Jiang Ziquan’s heart leap with joy.

“So where do you live, Ziquan? Who else is in your family?” After exchanging a few words, Mrs. Shen’s attitude towards Jiang Ziquan completely changed. Mr. Shen also looked at Jiang Ziquan with an expectant look in his eyes.

“Both my parents are still alive and I have an older brother who also got married today.”

“Really? Then today, two happy occasions have occurred for your family.” Mrs. Shen said sincerely.

“Yes, and my brother should be at his in-laws’ house right now as well.” Jiang Ziquang replied with a smile.

“Good, good, good.” For Mr. Shen to repeat the word ‘good’ three times in a word, one can obviously tell how good his mood is.

“My parents live on Fuxiang street, but I live alone near Mingxing in order to manage my restaurant.” Jiang Ziquan continued in excitement, the meeting today with her in-laws was a success and she emphasized the part where she lives ‘alone’.

“Mingxing? Yumo teaches at Mingxing High school, this must be fate!” Mrs. Shen was overjoyed, she felt that this marriage was like a match made in heaven.

So it turns out she’s a teacher at Mingxing. Jiang Ziquan’s eyes brightened, this meant there would be more opportunities for them to meet in the future. I don’t believe that I can’t win this fairy’s heart!

“Yumo, you should visit Ziquan when you’re free.” Mrs. Shen said earnestly.

Shen Yumo glanced at the Jiang Ziquan whose eyes were practically glowing and nodded: “I will, mother.”

“Mrs. Shen, my parents would like to meet the two of you so when you’re available, please give them a call.” Jiang Ziquan said shamelessly.

“We have plenty of time, whatever is most convenient for your parents.” Overall, Mr.s Shen felt very satisfied. In the first place, if the other party’s parents didn’t get angry it was already a good outcome. For somebody’s daughter to suddenly marry a random, of course, any parent would be disgruntled, so the Shen family was fully prepared to apologize.

After all, it was the Shen family who let down the Jiang family.

Jiang Ziquan, on the other hand, was quite eager to share the news, now that the wedding was guaranteed to happen.

After dinner, Shen Yumo escorted Jiang Ziquan out the door. Walking next to each other, the two looked like the perfect pair.

“Yumo, are you free tomorrow? Would you like to meet my parents?” Jiang Ziquan fidgeted with her scarf, feeling nervous. Although she could calmly face Shen Yumo’s parents, she was cautious with Shen Yumo.

Shen Yumo felt that this entire marriage was completely absurd. However, she remembered that the person who sacrificed the most wasn’t her, but this energetic girl in front of her. Her expression darkened as she thought along these lines.

Jiang Ziquan was quite sensitive to Shen Yumo’s subtle reaction, and immediately noticed the change in her expression. Thinking that the fairy didn’t want to meet her parents, Jiang Ziquan was slightly disappointed but she expected it. After all, Shen Yumo wanted to forget this whole affair, so it was quite normal for her to refuse Jiang Ziquan’s offer.

“Nevermind, it’s fine. I’ll do whatever you want to do.”

Suddenly Shen Yumo looked at her and smiled. A gentle smile, with a hint of mischievous behind it, “I’ll be free in the afternoon.”

Jiang Ziquan stopped and stood there stunned, looking stupid as she stared at the fairy’s blinding smile. Furthermore, besides the fairy’s soothing and healing smile, she had actually agreed.

Perhaps she was afraid that Shen Yumo would change her mind, Jiang Ziquan quickly trotted up to her, a big smile on her face.

“Wait a minute.” Shen Yumo didn’t know why this girl was so happy all of a sudden, but she felt her mood improve as well.

“What’s wrong?” Jiang Ziquan asked, her smile faltering.

Shen Yumo unclasped the jade that hung around her and held it out towards Jiang Ziquan. The jade seemed very valuable and the owner seemed to treasure it immensely. Shen Yumo hated taking advantage of others and especially hated taking someone’s treasured item.

With the jade lying in her palm, she said nothing as she looked at Jiang Ziquan.

Does the fairy still want to return the betrothal token? Jiang Ziquan pouted and then quickly reached out, grabbing Shen Yumo’s hand. The hand was slightly cold but felt good to touch: “Since the proposal was hasty, I could only use the jade in place of an engagement ring and since we’re both still married, keep it for now. In a few days, I will buy an engagement ring and exchange it with the jade.”

Just now, Jiang Ziquan acted like a ‘rogue’[1] but she will never admit it.

“No need.” Shen Yumo frowned and shook her head. She did not mean to return the jade for an engagement ring.

Jiang Ziquan pretended not to hear anything, turned around and ran, waving her hand:

“See you tomorrow.”

Shen Yumo watched her go, thinking this girl is quite funny.

“Plain Water [2], why are you over here?” Lin Cuo wiped the sweat on her forehead, feeling exhausted. She was designing her new home when all of a sudden Jiang Ziquan texted a message through WeChat.

Shang Qu Road, Jianmin Community Garage, license plate number 2333, come quickly.

At first, Lin Cuo was at a loss for words because although this friend of hers had an unusual temper, they called her if something important happened. Thinking that this was a bit strange, she tried to call back, but unexpectedly, the other’s phone was turned off.

So with no other choice, she ran over to the place indicated in the message.

“Forest Flower, I have a secret to tell you.” Jiang Ziquan’s eyes glittered and her smile was dazzling, so obviously she was in a good mood.

Lin Cuo felt helpless towards this friend of hers. They were university roommates and they’ve known each other for ten years now. Naturally, Lin Cuo knew that something extremely good must’ve happened for Jiang Ziquan to be this happy.

However, both of them had very different definitions of ‘happiness’ so she didn’t know if what happened will be worth the trouble. Yet, despite their polar opposite personalities and ideals, they got along well.

They even called each other by nicknames. Jiang Ziquan called her “Forest Flower” and she called her “Plain Water”

“Alright, tell me, what’s the secret?” Lin Cuo got into Jiang ZIquan’s car, sighing.

“HeHe.” Jiang Ziquan smirked a few times, and her expression became twisted by a smug smile. “Did you know that I met a fairy today? A fairy.”

Lin Cuo shook her head, speechless. How boring. So she ran all the way here just for this. Wait, wasn’t this girl into boys?

“Hey, why aren’t you saying anything?” Jiang Ziquan asked curiously.

“So you met a fairy. Then what happened?” Lin Cuo rolled her eyes but not wanting to burst her friend’s bubble, motioned for her to continue.

Jiang Ziquan glanced at her, then looked away, then glanced back again.

If Jiang Ziquan’s brother was here, he would say: “Did your eyes pull a tendon or something?”

However Lin Cuo was different, she only became more curious after seeing her friend’s behavior.

Jiang Ziquan took out the little red book, the corners of her mouth lifting: “And then I got married.”

“What?!” Lin Cuo’s eyes widened in shock and she snatched the book and began flipping through it.

“Both of the aforementioned parties, Miss Jiang Ziquan, and Miss Shen Yumo, agree to this marriage. Under the state’s jurisdiction, both parties shall share a legal marriage relationship. Marriage officialized in year 8102, November 10th, 4:00 pm.” Lin Cuo read aloud in disbelief. [3]

Jiang Ziquan smirked: “Doesn’t my Yumo look like a fairy?”

“You’ve only met her today and then you got married?” Lin Cuo carefully studied the woman’s picture. Although the fairy was indeed a beautiful woman, this was not the point they should be focusing on.

Jiang Ziquan nodded.

Lin Cuo looked at Jiang Ziquan like she was looking at an idiot. How come this fool is becoming more and more unreasonable?!

Jiang Ziquan also knew that this matter was too absurd, but the situation at the time caused her to act and although it was on impulse, she did not regret it.

Then she simply told Lin Cuo the details of the proposal and marriage.

Lin Cuo took a long time to digest Jiang Ziquan’s story. In her opinion, Jiang Ziquan did have a right to be angry at the man and was rash in deciding this was ‘love at first sight’, but what worried her was Shen Yumo. This woman named Shen Yumo seemed to have changed her mind too quickly.

“Aren’t you afraid that this woman is lying to you?” Lin Cuo threw the book back at Jiang Ziquan. She knew her friend had a kind heart, and wouldn’t stand idly at a woman in trouble, but she was worried that Shen Yumo was tricking her friend.

“I’m not afraid.” Jiang Ziquan shrugged indifferently and then paused before saying, “It’s a path I chose to take, so I won’t regret it nor will I be afraid of it.”

These serious words coming from Jiang Ziquan who wore a serious expression was quite convincing. Lin Cuo wanted to say a few more words to persuade her friend but held back after hearing this.

“Oh, I need to stay at your house today.”

“Huh? Why?”

Jiang Ziquan explained: “My brother’s marriage also got officialized today so I bet he’ll take me out to celebrate all night. If he does that, I won’t be able to come back here in time.”

“Alright,” Lin Cuo nodded and then said, “did your parents agree to this marriage?”

“They did. Although the strange part is that the fairy’s family agreed to.”

Jiang Ziquan was not stupid. Not only did she ruin the fairy’s original wedding, but she had also married the fairy herself. Naturally, the parents should be angry but they treated her like a daughter-in-law instead. It didn’t even surprise them, as if they expected this to happen.

Lin Cuo thought for a while and then frowned: “There seems to be something fishy going on. Protect your money and draw up a prenuptial agreement. That way you won’t be deceived and dragged into ruin.”

Previously, Jiang Ziquan had gone with the flow, but now that she thought it through, it really was a little strange.

Soon, the two of them arrived at Lin Cuo’s house.

Lin Cuo gave her friend some fruit to snack on, then asked her what she wanted to eat. After all that happened today, she doubted that this glutton had enough to eat.

“Anything is fine, as long as there’s some wine with it.” Jiang Ziquan was in a happy mood and took out a cigarette, skillfully lighting it.

“No smoking.” The Lin Cuo who smelled the smoke from a mile away called out to her.

“Alright.” Jiang Ziquan stood up and walked to the balcony, blowing out a puff. She turned on her phone and looked through the barrage of missed calls. 42 missed calls from her mother, 20 from her father, 21 from her brother, and even 15 from her sister-in-law. It seemed like everyone was getting anxious.

Jiang Ziquan was preparing to call her mother when the other side called first.

Jiang Ziquan smiled, leaned on the balcony’s railing, and answered the phone: “Hey, Mom.”

“Ziquan, did you really get married? What’s the girl’s name? What do they do for a living? Who are her parents? Ah, your mother doesn’t care if the other is the same sex, so don’t worry there. When are her parents willing to meet to discuss the wedding?”

Mrs. Jiang had so many questions, but Jiang Ziquan was thinking about Shen Yumo and didn’t listen.

“Hello? Can you hear me? Ziquan?” Mrs. Jiang looked down at her phone to make sure she was still on call with Jiang Ziquan.

“Yes, mom, I married today. Her name is Shen Yumo. She is an amazing person.” When talking about Shen Yumo, Jiang Ziquan’s expression softened, and her face lit up with joy.

Mrs. Jiang paused, then feeling relieved said: “Finally, my daughter has someone she likes. This is great.”

“I’ll take you to see her tomorrow afternoon. Make sure you and dad behave tomorrow.”

Mrs. Jiang laughed and teased, “What are you so afraid of? That I’ll bully the person you like? Don’t worry, I’m so happy right now that I can’t see straight.”

Jiang Ziquan took another puff of cigarettes, “Alright, that’s all for now. Bye, mom.”

T/N notes:

[1]: rouge (耍流氓) means to play tricks, scam or tease a woman. Usually used to describe a male.

[2]: Plain water and Forest flower: Lame code names they gave each other. A pun on their names, for example ‘Lin’ means Forest.

[3]: Year 8102: Ok, but really it’s going to take 6000 years for gay marriage to be legalized? Wtf. original text: (时间8102年11月10日16点整) If I mistranslated, someone please tell me.

The following message is brought to you by Riptide’s lack of faith in humanity.

Sidenote: Haha, I wish that gay marriage was treated like this in actual Asia and well, I guess everywhere in general. Both parents are all like: “My daughter got married to another female? Welp, that’s chill, now on to our regular daily lives.” Like what? But then again, everything in fiction is better than the real world. Hahaha… Riptide’s lack of faith in humanity has just increased by 100.

  1. About the year… it’s 2018 backwards (this novel was written in 2018). The novel is tagged as “modern”, so it should be set within 20-25 years of when it was written

  2. The year 8102 and it’s only been 3 years since marriage was legalized, so around 6000 years for China to legalize gay marriage eh? Yep sounds about right.

Ziquans family seems really nice, but indeed Yumo’s family is kind of suspicious atm, I’m guessing it has to do with what Yumo said about the grandfather saying it was an auspicious day and hour to get married and how the family really seems into fate and stuff?

Yumo seems like a nice lady though, she doesn’t seem to understand Ziquan really fell for her and she thinks she’s just acting out of pity or something, hope Ziquan can get through to her soon, and like I understand Yumo being very confused how a woman could just fall for her so fast and be ready to be there for Herz especially since she seems to think of herself as a somewhat full woman? Beauty or not.

Ohh yeah forgot to mention it when it was said but of course she’s still nice and pure haha, even with a boyfriend of 4 years, cuz you know that’s how it always is in Chinese stories lol, legal gay marriage or not.

  3. I think it’s the 2018 backwards thing, but do recall that it is 4720 in the Chinese year system. I doubt the author believes it will take 3300 years to legalise same sex marriage, but it’s probably a dig at the government. It hasn’t banned Yuri works per se, but it has harassed them as part of its decency campaign. Which is a real pity as there’s been a wonderful Yuri boom in China. It could be a source of income that doesn’t involve tourists or environmental degradation.
