Ch.75- During the preparation for the hateful banquet?!

While Wen Jiexi was being prodded like a lifeless doll by her brother’s team of designers, the variety show finally released the episodes onto the internet. Previously the show had already received a lot of attention due to the promotion photos and videos. Therefore, when the first episode aired, the viewership ratings were really high. 

In the first episode, the audience had fun laughing at the expressions of the eight artists who were abandoned in the park. Among them, Lan Yuyan was the funniest as he was the first one. When he saw his car driving away, he actually chased after the car. After a few more steps, he finally realized he was on his own and stupidly looked around with the most pitiful expression. His reaction was so ridiculous that most of the audience were slapping their tables while doubling over with laughter. 

“Pfft-hahaha! I’m going to laugh to death! He actually chased after the car! What is he thinking!” 

“Does he think it’s a basic workout exercise? How can his legs compare to a car?!! Hahaha!” 

In addition, Wen Jiexi’s perplexed expression with her outstretched hand also gave the audience quite a laugh. 

“Wow, they threw her out like a broken toy! What a powerful move! I want to stretch out my hand like that too!” 

“Hahahaha! I feel like Little Sheep is more powerful than everyone else! Her combat skills are amazing, I want to have this type of skill too +1” 

“Tsk, I think they’re just playing for the crowd. They’re not even treating the actors like proper humans, amazing~ Hey, I need to have a talk with the production crew, just one sentence: Hehe-da.” (T/N: Hehe-da is a Chinese Internet slang word which means ‘lol stop’ basically.)

“Hey, person above me, are you an idiot? Don’t you see they were abandoned in a nice and cheery park? Obviously they didn’t want to hurt the actual actors and what did you expect them to do? Actually tell the actors they were being abandoned? Then how would they get genuine reactions? I also want to say to you: Hehe-da.” 

Although Wen Jiexi’s Weibo still had a few black fans and anti-fans jumping around, the majority of her feed was filled with endless praise. Not to mention, the show featured eight popular artists so the overwhelming number of fans were able to suppress those hateful comments. 

Unfortunately, Wen Jiexi herself could only glance at these comments hastily. She couldn’t even read the comments if she wanted to as she really is too busy. Besides trying on different types of clothes everyday, there were also shoes, hair, makeup and a dozen other styles she had to try on every day. Then she would have to pose for photos as the designer team decided which style was the best. Wen Jiexi had become so numb to this by now that when the morning of the banquet finally arrived, Wen Jiexi was so relieved that she almost cried. 

The only thing that kept her going was the thought of Sister Su. She thought to herself, if her dress was really beautiful, then Sister Su would praise her when they meet after the banquet! The hard work for this week will not be wasted! Hehehe, wait for me, Sister Su! After a long week, we will finally meet again! I look forward to it! 

The designer currently sticking a needle into the dress saw that the usually well-behaved little lady was now showing a silly smile. The designer nervously thought, Is this young lady so stressed that we broke her? Is she brain damaged now? 

And so the designer hurriedly ran out of the room and decided to invite the boss who hired them in the first place.  

“We’re fine-tuning the last bits over here!” 

“What about the hairstylist?”

“They’re on their way over here now.” 

“What? They’re coming only now? Where is their sense of timing?!!” 

The blue veins on Wen Linshu’s forehead were jumping around like crazy. He hated attending these banquets for this exact reason, it was like fighting a losing battle every time. 

If someone who attends banquets frequently were to see this, they would definitely say, ‘Who the heck needs to be this busy with the preparations every time? It’s only the first few times or so. Then afterward the designers will understand your personal preference and they won’t need to personally fight with you again. It’s your fault for being lazy and not preparing ahead of time! Now, you even say it’s the banquet’s fault?’

Knock, knock….

Knocks sounded at the door and the noisy room quieted as the one closest to the door opened the door. 

“What’s the matter?” Wen Linshu asked, knowing clearly that the one at the door was the designers assigned to work personally on Wen Jiexi. 

“Young Master, the Young Miss has been smiling crazily to herself for a while…..perhaps she’s feeling tired, why not let her rest for a bit?” The designer said cautiously.

“Smiling crazily?”  Wen Linshu frowned slightly and raised his hand to halt the movements of the other designers buzzing around his head like flies. For this occasion, the men will obviously wear suits otherwise they would get weird looks from the other guests. While the men do have to wear suits, women’s clothing are definitely much more troublesome. The men only need to find a suitable tuxedo and then a pair of leather shoes. The hardest part of their costume is actually the hair. Therefore, Wen Linshu’s preparations were already 80% done. 

He glanced at the clock. It just reached noon so there’s no need to hurry. He pondered a little. This is Wen Jiexi’s first time attending a banguest and there will be many more of these events in the future. It’s fine if they’re a little late, they shouldn’t push her too hard or else she might reject all invitations later in the future. 

“We’ll finish up the rest in the afternoon. Let’s have lunch first and the designers can take a break as well. Fuss about the dress later, and don’t be too loud.” Wen Linshu glared at the person next to him in warning. Although the people he hired weren’t bad, it doesn’t mean he’ll allow his house to turn into a messy vegetable market. He had to keep everything neat and tidy. 

Everyone else nodded like chickens pecking at rice: As expected of the President, he is so arrogant. 

Wne Linshu hurried out of the room and towards the room Wen Jiexi was in. On his way up the stairs, he ran into a new maid who he ordered to go downstairs and tell Wang Ma to prepare the food and tell his parents it’s time to eat. 

As for why there are new maids in the household…..the house they have moved into is too big for one person to clean. Previously, Wang Ma would have to cook, clean the manor and the courtyard all by herself. This was too much for one person so she asked for a few maids to be hired to help her out. And under Wang Ma’s recommendation, they also hired a head butler to manage the household. Although there are a few more people in the household now, no accidents have happened and everyone was still safe and sound.

Of course, those who wish to scheme can do so, he couldn’t care less if they did. After all, even the Wen family climbed up to their current position by using a few dirty tricks here and there. Except for the foolish Wen Jiexi, everyone knew that you have to be prepared to scheme and play dirty if you want to get to the top. 

Wne Linshu waved a hand and the butler standing to the side immediately stepped forward. Unlike the old and gentle Wang Ma, this butler was only in his thirties and yet his face was always so serious. He never smiled and his attitude is strict and rigorous. He works for Wen Shan and since his personality is honest enough, he was asked to work for the Wen household. His name is Mo Hang. 

“Young Master, the car has been prepared. We have ordered two cars of the same style, low-key and not obnoxiously luxurious as per your requirements. They are now parked outside with the proper personnel that will drive them later.” 

“Very good. In addition to the cars, make sure to keep the things we’re bringing safe. This is Little Xi’s first appearance so I do not want anything to mess up her debut today.” Wen Linshu narrowed his eyes as he tightened his tie. Their Wen family weren’t friends with everybody, it was unavoidable that they would have a few business conflicts and competitions here and there. And so, those troublesome people must be isolated and taken care of. 

“Understood, I will supervise the proceedings.” Mo Hang also understood just how much importance the Wen family had attached to this banquet. From his father he had also heard how important this banquet was. After all, the one hosting this banquet is the tycoon of the business world, a major aristocratic family, the Su family. Small business families were not eligible to attend banquets hosted by the Su family, only those middle level and above were able to enter. Therefore, those in attendance would be the crème de la crème, the super rich and famous, and people who you cannot afford to offend. Nothing can go wrong, or else they would have to pay with their heads. 

“Leave me now. Oh, make sure to eat your lunch.” Wen Linshu reminded. 

“Yes, sir.” Mo Hang bent his waist slightly and then turned and left.

Knock, knock….

Wen Linshu knocked gently on the door and the door swung open quickly. Sure enough, just like the designer said, Wen Jiexi was dazedly standing in the middle of the room while wearing a silly smile on her face, as if she was thinking about something that made her happy. Her eyes were unfocused, and his little sister didn’t even seem to notice that he was standing at her door. 

“Little Xi.” Wen Linshu said helplessly and then waved his hand at the designers who were still playing with Wen Jiexi. They retreated quietly as he walked over to his little sister’s side. 

“Ah, brother, why are you here? Have you finished your preparations?” Wen Jiexi returned to her senses when she heard her brother’s voice and she looked over in surprise at Wen Linshu who suddenly appeared in front of her. 

“What are you thinking about? Come, it’s time for lunch. Let’s go down and eat.” Wen Linshu gently patted Wen Jiexi on the shoulder.  He really wanted to pat her soft hair but couldn’t mess up the beautifully styled curls on her head. If he touched it, he might mess it all up. Heng, stupid banquet. I hate it. 

“I was thinking about…..how after the banquet is over, and when I meet Sister Su in this dress….do you think Sister Su will like it?” Wen Jiexi said with her cheeks flushed.

Cough! A heavy blow! Wen Linshu held a hand to his chest, how could he forget about this! Suddenly he wanted to kick all these designers out! But he can’t! Little Xi must have a beautiful debut! Ahhhhhh! I feel so conflicted! 

“Brother? Are you coming?” Wne Jiexi, who had already walked out of the door, turned and looked curiously at her brother who was still standing in place with a strange expression. 

“Yes, yes, I’m coming.” Wen Linshu nodded. At the same time, he secretly made a note. Heng, Su Chenyu, for Little Xi’s sake, I’ll let you feast your eyes on her beauty! Only this once!

As soon as Wen Jiexi arrived downstairs, she could smell the fragrant aroma of food. She touched her hungry belly….ah, she had only a piece of bread this morning. If it wasn’t for this piece of bread, she would’ve not only been exhausted but probably starved to death as well. 

“Wang Ma, what are we eating today!” Wen Jiexi ran down the stairs happily, the delicious smell giving her a burst of strength. 

“Young Miss, do be careful.” Wang Ma called out quickly as she brought out the food with two other maids. 

“I’m fine, Wang Ma.” Wen Jiexi said with an embarrassed smile. Her eyes lit up as she walked towards the table. There were six dishes with a bowl of soup on the side. The amount was enough for everyone to get a hearty portion of each dish. Usually, if you put this much food in front of a four-person family they wouldn’t be able to finish it. However, with a hidden foodie named Wen Jiexi, this much food was a piece of cake. 

The two maids on the side: This has been an eye-opener! 

“Haha, is our Little Xi that hungry?” A chuckle sounded out from the stairs. Everyone looked up to see Tan Yashi at the top of the stairs, her arms hooked around the crook of Wen Shan’s right arm. Her dress was almost finished, a dark purple dress that hugged her vivacious figure. Wen Shan also wore a dark blue suit, his jet-black hair meticulously gelled and combed to the side. Together, the two of them painted quite a beautiful picture. 

“Mom, Dad, you too look so good together.” Wen Jiexi praised without hesitation.

“Hehe, I look good in everything I wear so I think I should be paired with a more handsome fellow. Just look at your dad, he looks so old that I look like I’m standing next to an old man.” Although Tan Yashi complained, the corner of her eyes lifted and revealed her good mood. It seemed she was rather happy that Wen Jiexi praised them both. 

However, when Wen Shan heard Tan Yashi’s comment, the corners of his mouth twitched slightly. He thought to himself, Hey, I workout everyday to maintain this current figure. My figure should be the perfect golden ration among men! I don’t even have gray hair on my head! There may be some wrinkles in the corners of my eyes, but they can be ignored! And this description of being an old man is just too much! 

However, his unsaid grievances were ignored by his wife as Tan Yashi pinched Wen Jiexi’s small face and started a series of complements, 

“Aiya~ Our little baby is so beautiful! Just look at this smooth skin, your mother feels envious just looking at it! Oh, it seems your chest has gotten bigger ever since you came back from your little trip, but if it was just a little bigger it would’ve been perfect.” Tan Yashi teased while her eyes wandered towards a certain area on Wen Jiexi’s body. 

“Wuwuwu……MOM!” Wen Jiexi hugged her chest and looked at her mother in disbelief. How could her own mother say such a thing! How terrible! 

“Alright, Little Xi, let’s hurry up and eat. We have to leave at five.” Wen Shan said helplessly and then glanced down quickly. Then he looked over at his wife. En, well his daughter’s is a little smaller. 

Wen Jiexi: You evil adults! 

While Wen Jiexi was in a state of grief, she turned her grief and anger into her appetite and cleaned the dishes on the table. The other three had to hurriedly move their chopsticks or else she would’ve eaten it all! 

Half an hour later, Wen Jiexi drank the last of her soup and then patted her stomach with a content face. She collapsed lazily on the sofa. She felt like she was going to fall asleep any second when Tan Yashi walked over and pinched Wen Jiexi’s cheek, 

“Wuwu….mom, what are you doing…” Wen Jiexi pouted in dissatisfaction. 

“Little Xi, it’s time for you to go back upstairs. It won’t be good if we arrive late.” Tan Yashi pulled Wen Jiexi up from the sofa and said helplessly. 

“But I want to sleep.”  Wen Jiexi complained.

“Little Xi, trust me, once you arrive at the banquet, you won’t want to leave in the end.” Tan Yashi pinched Wen Jiexi’s cheek and said.

“No way.” Wen Jiexi pouted. She was going to meet up with Sister Su afterward, why would she want to stay at the banquet? Sister Su is more important than anything else! She was about to argue when she saw the ‘No backtalk, young lady’ expression on her mother’s face. In the end, she decided to obediently go back upstairs into the dressing room. 

“Honey, why don’t you tell her the truth? The reason why this banquet is being hosted in the first place.’ Wen Shan picked up a piece of apple and looked at his lamenting daughter. He felt distress for her in his heart. 

“Old man, don’t even think of making trouble. I just want to give Little Xi a surprise. Do you have anything you want to complain about?” Tan Yashi said, raising an eyebrow.

“Nope, no, of course not.” Wen Shan quickly waved his hand and pointed at the stairs, 

“Honey, the designers are still waiting for you. You should go back up there.” 

“Heng.” Tan Yashi gave Wen SHan another warning glare and then stood up to leave. 

Wen Shan: My dear baby girl, Dad is sorry. We can only go along and satisfy your mother’s wicked desire. 

Meanwhile, upstairs Wen Jiexi started her life as a mannequin again. For the designers, she was like a lifeless doll to be played with. After two grueling hours, they were finally done. 

The end product was a beautiful white evening gown that revealed her slender white calves. She wore small pair of high heels and her long black hair was curled up to reveal a swan-like tender neck that paired nicely with an aquamarine necklace. Although her dress and style was rather simple, it only made Wen Jiexi’s elegant temperament improve a few levels. 

“Finally done.” Wne Jeixi felt so relieved, she almost cried. However, she dared not to as that would only ruin the makeup and restart the process again. If she had to endure that again she’ll flip the entire house. 

“Our little princess is so cute.” The three other members of the Wen family had finished over an hour ago and were now sitting leisurely on the sofa while drinking tea. When they saw Wen Jiexi come down, all three pairs of eyes lit up. Sure enough, Little Xi is the cutest and most beautiful person in the entire world! 

“High heels are so hard to walk in.” Wen Jiexi said and looked down at her shoes. Although she had a good sense of balance, she was still unaccustomed to these types of shoes and her balance was thrown out the window. She had to walk slowly in order not to fall. Suddenly she envied her Sister Xue. That sly fox could still walk around like a tiger in these torture devices. Should she ask Sister Xue to take her in as a disciple and teach her the ways of walking in heels? 

“Walking in high heels is an art that will become a habit over time. You are still only wearing the low-heeled kind and those can barely be counted as heels in the first place. Just look at me.” Tan Yashi lifted her dress a little to show Wen Jiexi her shoes. Sure enough, hers was more than two times taller than Wen Jiexi’s. Then she easily walked around a few steps, turned around and spinned in place without losing balance at all. 

Wen Jiexi: You are the best! QAQ 

After another half an hour of preparations, they were ready to set off. It will take about 30 minutes to reach their destination. They will be divided into two cars, the first one will drive Wen Shan and Tan Yashi while the second one will drive the Wen siblings. 

Looking at the scenery outside, Wen Jiexi asked curiously, 

“Brother, how many people will be there?” 

Seeing that his sister was finally paying attention to something other than that big bad wolf, Wne Linshu felt moved. As long as it wasn’t about that woman, he’ll tell Wen Jiexi everything she wants to know! 

“En, the invitations that were sent out amount to about….well, there will be almost two hundred people there. Then the banquet will be divided into two venues, one for the younger generation and the other is for older generation people like our dad. If you want to see both, then there should be a mix of the generations in the middle. However, when we arrive, just follow me. I will introduce you to the people you need to know.” 

“So the guests are separated.” Wen Jiexi said in surprise. She just thought everyone would be mixed together. 

“Yup, unless you actually want to talk with those old geezers? All they’ll want to do is introduce you to their sons or daughters and probably even talk business with you. It’s better to hide within the younger crowd.” Wne Linshu shrugged, not bothering to conceal what he thought about the old geezers. To him, those old geezers were basically like pimps, always introducing him to this daughter or this so. So annoying. 

“Pff-hahaha! There’s even such a thing?” Wne Jiexi chuckled and then titled her head, “Brother, do you participate in these types of events often?” 

“Actually, I don’t really, but….it depends on the situation. From now on, you must prepare yourself to participate in these events more often in the gurue.” 

“Eh…..but I’ve never participated in one before….how come I have to participate even more…..” Wen Jiexi said with a sad face. 

“There are many events like these and they are very common. Before you couldn’t participate due to your poor health but now you should at least come out and see the outside world a little.” Wen Linshu coaxed. 

“Alright.” Wen Jiexi pouted. Now that she had a healthy body, she should make up for all those opportunities she missed in the past. Although she didn’t know why she had to participate, she might as well take a look and see just how great this so-called banquet is. 

Seeing that Wen Jiexi wasn’t exactly repulsed at the idea, Wen Linshu heaved a sigh of relief. However, when he thought about those people, he couldn’t help but frown. 

“Jiexi, when we arrive, you must keep smiling as much as possible. Stay near me and I will take you to a quiet area where you can eat your snacks quietly. There might be some annoying flies buzzing around who will ask you annoying questions, but you don’t have to answer them, just listen quietly.” 

“Questions?” Wen Jiexi tilted her head in confusion, and wanted to ask a few questions herself when the car stopped. 

“Young Master, Young Miss, we’re here.” The driver opened the door for them. 

“Thank you.” ” Wen Linshu nodded, stepped out of the car, and then turned around to help Wen Jiexi out. 

“Is this it?” Wen Jiexi asked curiously and looked up at the venue that sparkled with luxury and opulence. It was a huge hotel with lots of luxury cars parked in front and many stylish men and women stood in front of it besides those cars. She stepped out of the car and together they walked towards the hotel’s entrance. 

“Let’s  go in first.” Wen Linshu said. 

“Are we not going to wait for Mom and Dad?” Wen Jiexi looked around and found her parents being surrounded by a bunch of adults their age. The moment her parents had stepped out of their car, they had been stuck in that crowd of noisy adults. 

“As you can see, they’re a bit busy.” Wen Linshu shrugged, and walked towards the hotel with Wen Jiexi. He handed the invitation to the security guard outside and then the two of them smoothly walked in. 

The decorations inside could be considered magnificent yet not overly extravagant and there were already lots of people inside. 

“The area we’re approaching now is the mixed zone.” Wen Linshu explained to Wen Jiexi in a low voice.

Wen Jiexi looked around and indeed saw people of all ages around them. Not to mention, the moment they entered, the people in the mixed zone turned towards them and their eyes seemed to lit up. No, it’s more accurate to say that their eyes lit up when they saw the brother next to her. She felt puzzled. These people seemed like very famous and rich celebrities. Why would people like them care about her big brother who is only a small president of a small company? 

Then their eyes turned towards her. Those eyes seemed like they were sizing up their prey and it made Wen Jiexi feel extremely uncomfortable. Wen Linshu seemed to have noticed Wen Jiexi’s thoughts and purposely blocked her from their sights. 

“Let’s go over there. That’s the gathering place for the younger generations.” Wen Linshu led Wen Jiexi to another area, this place a little smaller than the last but just as exquisite. The only thing that separated this room was a beautiful archway that someone could hide behind. 

The moment Wen Linshu and Wen Jiexi entered the archway, even more gazes turned their way. Unlike the older guests earlier that were more subtle these gazes were rather…..direct! And all types of emotions flickered in those eyes!
