I woke up to find I have a child Ch.12

Chapter 12: Black-hearted lotus

Han Feixu sat on a wooden stool, just like a child waiting to be scolded by their teacher. Oh, right, her current mentality is that of a high school student right now, so it’s natural for her to be afraid of adults scolding her.

Ye Mingxin stared at Han Feixu’s lowered head for a long time before saying one sentence, “Does it hurt anywhere?”

Han Feixu looked up with a confused expression and saw that Ye Mingxin no longer looked angry. Instead, she looked at Han Feixu with a calm gaze that held a little bit of concern, some helplessness, and some bitterness. But there was no blame nor any contempt in her gaze.

So she answered honestly, “No, not at all. I feel completely fine.”

“We should still take you to the hospital for a checkup. There must be a reason for why you suddenly became like this.” Ye Mingxin lowered her eyes and pressed the screen on her phone a few times. “Tomorrow I will take you to the hospital for a full-body examination.”

“No need…” The words became stuck in Han Feixu’s throat before she could finish her sentence.

Ye Mingxin raised her eyes and quietly looked at Han Feixu, “Although you don’t remember me, you should know this: I am your wife, your legal partner, and your closest person. Therefore, you should not reject my concern for you.”

Han Feixu stared blankly at her, “But aren’t we getting divorced soon?”

Ye Mingxin’s movements paused for a second before she put away her phone, “Let’s go home first. You need to get a good rest before I take you to see the doctor tomorrow.”

The subject was changed, thus the conversation was put to rest. Han Feixu couldn’t bring up the divorce matter again without making it awkward so she decided to simply stand up and walk outside. Ye Mingxin followed after her.

Liang Zhu was still eavesdropping outside so when she heard the sounds of footsteps she hurriedly made her way back to the living room and then printed a page of packaging slips. Then she began to stick them onto the packages like she has been doing this for the past few minutes.

Han Feixu came out and gave her a wave before leaving, “Liang-jie, I’m leaving first.”

“Ai, goodbye, see you later.”

After Han Feixu left, Ye Mingxin moved to follow her but Liang Zhu suddenly rushed forward and slammed the front door shut. Both the Han Feixu outside and the Ye Mingxin inside were taken aback by this sudden action.

“Liang-jie, what’s the meaning of this?”

With her voice being blocked by the door, Han Feixu’s voice sounded a little muffled. Liang Zhu hurriedly shouted a reply, “You should go down first, Ye Mingxin and I have some company affairs stuff to discuss. We’ll be done soon, don’t worry about it!”

Han Feixu’s knocking on the door stopped and soon the sound of footsteps gradually moving away could be heard. Liang Zhu listened carefully to the movements outside and made sure the person had left before finally releasing the doorknob. She turned her head to look at Ye Mingxin.

After the initial shock had passed, Ye Mingxin was once again wearing her calm expression: “What is it that you want to say to me?”

Liang Zhu put down the packaging slips in her hands and smiled heartily, “I am not the same as Shen Sangluo. She is absolutely loyal to Han Feixu but I am more… neutral.”

Ye Mingxin’s expression changed slightly. She didn’t say anything and simply stared at Liang Zhu.

“If Han Feixu hadn’t become like this, I would wholeheartedly support everything she did, because I am her agent and her friend. Whatever she wants to do, as long as it’s what she truly wants, I would not object to it. But now…she has forgotten everything from the good to the bad. Although she’s not exactly at the level of a clean slate or a blank sheet of paper, the most drastic and emotional events in her life that have colored her canvas have all been erased.”

Ye Mingxin seemed to understand what Liang Zhu was trying to get at. She lowered her previously crossed arms and stood up taller. She looked at Liang Zhu with a surprised and somewhat moved gaze. It seemed she did not expect Liang Zhu to say something like this.

“I’m a rational-minded person, so I won’t be able to help you out with this kind of stuff. Furthermore, I do not know what happened between the two of you, but I do know that for the two of you to reach this point, you both must have done something wrong. Now the opportunity to make up for your mistakes and clear the misunderstandings have arrived, don’t you want to grasp onto this opportunity?”

Ye Mingxin lowered her eyes and gently rubbed the jade bracelet around her wrist. About three seconds later, she let out a light chuckle. This time, her smile was no longer the type that would cause chills to go down one’s spine but a genuine and sincere smile, “Thank you.”

Liang Zhu waved her hands, “No need to thank me, I am not doing this for your sake.”

Ye Mingxin’s smile did not falter, “I know.”

After saying this, Ye Mingxin opened the door and walked out. After the door closed, Liang Zhu mumbled under her breath, “What do you know exactly? Ai, you’re the only one who knows now.”

She walked over to the window and looked down at the bored Han Feixu who was mindlessly pacing back and forth. She sighed. Shen Sangluo had never witnessed what Han Feixu looked like when she was truly in love with Ye Mingxin. She did not suffer like Liang Zhu did, forced to eat dog food all day because of this lovestruck couple. After being subjected to this treatment for such a long time, she began to have thoughts of finding a girlfriend of her own to spoil every day. However, how did such a perfectly loving couple end up on such a strange path….she could not bear to watch this tragedy play out.

This was an opportunity for Ye Mingxin, but also…an opportunity for Han Feixu.

An outsider can see things more clearly than those involved, perhaps after overcoming the obstacles in the way, perhaps Han Feixu will be able to see the things she had once missed before. Maybe then, her feelings will have changed into something completely different.

Liang Zhu watched the leaving couple with a sorrowful gaze for a while until they became a dot on the horizon. Liang Zhu returned to her messy couch and her living room that looked like a doghouse. She picked up the burger she had ordered for takeout and took two bites. She didn’t even have enough time to eat as she picked up her phone and began to go through her Weibo.

She refreshed her page, but she felt like she had forgotten to do something. However, after eating a bucket of fried chicken and reading through Weibo, she was too happy to remember what she had forgotten. By the time it was midnight and she had gotten ready for bed, she finally remembered what she had forgotten.

Express delivery! If she doesn’t ship the packages out by tomorrow, her customers will crawl through the internet and strangle her to death!!!

On the way back, the atmosphere was awkwardly quiet. Han Feixu hated this type of situation the most. Where she was in an enclosed space, the setting was quiet, and there was a person beside her but neither acknowledged the other. If this continues, she feels like she’s going to suffocate from the awkwardness.

She moved her stiff shoulder and decided to bring up a topic of conversation, “I never thought that Liang-jie was such a shopaholic, there are so many unopened packages in her home.”

Ye Mingxin was focused on driving and shifted the steering wheel to turn around the corner. She replied in a quiet voice, “Liang Zhu is a part-time Taobao* store owner and works with a couple of foreign musical instruments shops. She’s been doing this job ever since she first returned to China and now the scale on which her store operates is no longer considered small. With the help of your aunt, her store’s reputation has become pretty good.” (T/N: Taobao is like the Amazon of China and as a seller, you can open a “store” on Taobao to sell your goods. Very popular with smaller businesses)

After she finished speaking, Ye Mingxin turned her head to look at her. Han Feixu’s face was completely blank. She seemed to not understand how Liang Zhu and her aunt were involved.

Ye Mingxin finally remembered that Han Feixu knew Liang Zhu much later on so it was normal that her current high school self wouldn’t know.

She patiently explained; “Liang Zhu used to be your aunt’s student but then she contracted an illness and couldn’t sing anymore. Therefore, she had to change her career to becoming an agent instead.

However, nowadays, Liang Zhu’s part-time job as a Taobao store owner is now the full-time job while being an agent is her part-time job. She only has three artists under her. One of them has a hole in their brain as he offended a high-level official and was thus buried under the snow. Another was preparing to take over a side business Liang Zhu had started long ago and has now devoted herself to baking waffles and selling other baked goods every day. She had long forgotten her movie-star ambitions. As for the last artist, it was none other than the suddenly retired Han Feixu.

Liang Zhu was an agent affiliated with Gan Shi Company and every artist she worked with was carefully selected after being screened thoroughly. The senior executives gave her two newcomers to take care of this year and who knows how she was getting along with them these days.

Han Feixu was a little bit shocked. She would never have guessed that Liang Zhu was originally one of her aunt’s students. To be able to enter Juilliard School meant they must have great talent and an amazing work ethic. Not to mention that out of all the majors, Juilliard School’s vocal arts major ranks among the top three in the entire room. They only admit undergraduates into the program and only those who are within a certain age-range. Those who graduate from this program all become famous artists in the end.

However, because of a devastating illness, such an amazing talent was robbed from the world. As someone who used to study the performing arts as well, she could imagine the sorrow she would feel if her hand was injured to the extent that she could no longer play the violin. If that had happened to her, she would most definitely collapse within herself.

Yet, Liang Zhu looked perfectly fine and not at all like a discouraged artist whose talents were destroyed.

Amazing.

Han Feixu praised Liang Zhu in her heart, “But the packages I saw in her living room seemed to be rather flat. What’s inside of them? Parts of the instruments?”

Flat boxes? Ye Mingxin wasn’t paying attention to Liang Zhu’s living room when they had stormed in earlier. It took her about two seconds to fully recall a picture of it, “Oh, those will not be sold on Taobao. You see, Liang Zhu also has a part-time job as a luxury goods buyer and seller. Since she often goes abroad, she usually buys a few luxury goods along the way. Then she sells them to customers in China who are unable to buy them themselves. She’s been doing that for quite a few years now and has established a loyal customer base.”

….Not only was she not a discouraged artist, but she also held three different jobs! Amazing, truly amazing, Liang-jie!

One of her mother’s favorite sayings was “One heart cannot do two things.” Ten years may have passed, but she still firmly believed in this saying. Therefore, she really admired someone like Liang Zhu who can work three jobs at the same time.

Although it was midnight, there was still a lot of traffic on the East Second Ring Road*. They stopped at an intersection and waited for the light to change while Ye Mingxin took out a pair of sunglasses to put on her face. Han Feixu quietly looked out of the window as the red light began to flicker. Ye Mingxin then suddenly broke the silence, “What are you going to do about Yiyi?”  (T/N: East 2nd Ring Road is a famous street in Beijing. Since Beijing is so populated, often the streets are so bright that the night is even brighter than the day. It really harms the eyes, so some people wear sunglasses to offset this. )

Han Feixu turned her head, thought about it for two seconds before answering, “She’s too young, let’s keep it a secret for now.”

When the green light came on, Ye Mingxin stepped on the gas pedal and then said in a calm but firm voice, “She is not young anymore, she is already four. She is at an age where she can remember things and Yiyi is very smart. The only reason she hasn’t found out yet is because you haven’t been spending much time with her these past two days. Tomorrow is the weekend and if you try to spend the day with her, you will definitely be exposed.”

“Then…should we tell her?”

“Take her with us to the hospital tomorrow and then let her watch you get examined. Before telling her anything, let her understand that you are only sick and not that you intentionally chose to forget her.”

Yiyi may look easy to get along with for now, but once she gets worked up, she throws a tantrum and becomes as difficult as any other child. Fortunately, Yiyi is a rather smart and understanding child so most of the time one can get through to her just by patiently explaining everything to her.

Han Feixu responded dryly with an, “Oh.”

Everything has already been decided, why even bother asking her = =

After Ye Mingxin mentioned Yiyi, Han Feixu became even quieter. She simply lowered her head and looked at the folded hands in her lap. Once they arrived home, they both stepped out of the garage and walked towards the front door. Outside, the lawn was peaceful and quiet and as they walked, Han Feixu suddenly stopped the person in front of her.

Ye Mingxin turned around and looked at Han Feixu with a questioning gaze. Han Feixu had thought about it along the way and although it was a bit difficult to bring this topic up, if she doesn’t get the answer to her question then she will be unable to sleep tonight.

“This…you told me you agreed to divorce so…..”

When do you plan on carrying it out?

She wasn’t able to say this last half of her sentence before Ye Mingxin interrupted her, “We’ll wait until you’ve recovered.”

Han Feixu froze, “And what if I can’t recover from this?”

Ye Mingxin only stared at her silently.

Han Feixu seemed to understand the underlying meaning and grew dumbstruck, “If I can’t recover then we won’t divorce?!?!”

The corners of Ye Mingxin’s mouth raised slightly, but only for a moment, before she returned to her originally cold and indifferent look, “What are you talking about? I won’t take advantage of someone who’s going through such difficulties. If you can’t recover….we’ll discuss it later.”

Han Feixu’s eyes were full of distrust and Ye Mingxin stretched out a hand towards her, “Let’s go. It’s so late already, don’t you feel sleepy?”

Han Feixu looked at the fair and elegant hand in front of her. She deliberated for a long while before finally reaching out her own hand to accept it. Ye Mingxin then turned around and pulled Han Feixu towards the front door.

Ye Mingxin was once dubbed by her fans as the only goddess since the beginning of the world when Pangu split the heavens that best fit the phrase “clear as ice, clean as jade”. Yet, on this cold and windy night, the goddess revealed a black-hearted smile on her face. (T/N: clear as ice, clean as jade = chinese idiom for someone honest and pure or someone with a pristine reputation and known as a good person)

She won’t take advantage of this?

Who are you kidding?

  1. I’m slightly pissed off at the FL. The MC hid so much from the FL because she does have trust in the FL. There must’ve been something for MC to lose her trust in her wife. It feels bad to see the FL getting a free pass at their relationship without any effort. Unfair for pre-amnesia MC, I guess

  2. Well I’m all for it Mingxin, it seems like it was all problems if miscommunication and mc being very mentally and emotionally unstable for a while so do go ahead and win her over.

Though tbh idk if the mc deserves it.

Welp we’ll see what you yourself did to earn her wrath but I’m thinking it’s just you being bad at putting your thoughts into words, and with mc being so unstable and hiding things herself ….

Welp let’s see I really want them to talk things out already.

  3. first of all, thank you for the translations! they translations really are good for understanding the nuances of the story and the shades of grey the characters have.

the story so far has been interesting though currently I feel uncomfortable with the FL plotting to use the FL’s current state. taking advantage of the MC’s current state where she doesn’t know how she felt the past years feels very… uncomfortable. there’s a power imbalance here. I think it would have been better to have the FL suggest to live separately instead, sharing custody and then pursuing her wife. this would allow her to remind the MC why they fell in love in the first place while respecting the essence of her wife’s past decisions. I feel consent and respect are very important in relationships and this doesn’t feel like it. it gives a sense of forcibly tying someone to their side instead. but otherwise the premise is interesting in how there are very different viewpoints depending on what you’ve experienced and what you’ve seen and how their personalities and past experiences have led to the situation they currently have. (couples counseling also seems like a good idea~ maybe the FL should have suggested this before agreeing to the divorce)

I can see this isn’t a one side being completely in the wrong and instead its because no one has ever seen the whole picture that the current situation is happening. Shen Sangluo doesn’t seem to trust artists (fair what with all the things that happen in the industry and the temptations) and Han Fexiu didn’t tell her much regarding Ye Mingxin or her own feelings on the matter since they didn’t talk as often as before. Something which happens naturally when school ends and you no longer see each other so often. She has only ever seen Han Fexiu infatuated, drop her dream then heard those “I just want a family who doesn’t leave me” pain and loss after the scandal Ye Mingxin was involved in. She doesn’t even know Ye Mingxin and her loyalty to Han Fexiu makes her blind to see Ye Mingxin and only sees her as someone who hurt her best friend and isn’t worthy of her. Liang Zhu has seen Han Fexiu hurt but also extremely happy with Ye Mingxin so she’s more willing to see that it might be salvaged but she also doesn’t know the full story either. The MC obviously has very deep trust issues stemming from that maternal grandparent of hers–it shows in how she has told no one, not even her best friend, the whole story of her life experiences. She’s obviously very closed off and slow to trust. And given the environment of the entertainment industry, this would probably have worsened especially since she was only a newcomer to the circle when Ye Mingxin was “caught” not to mention losing her other emotional support system at the time. (I honestly hope she stops working in the circle and instead pursues her original dream because the entertainment circle can definitely be more toxic than other environments and its probably not good for her mental health). So she’d very much probably be unable to completely trust that Ye Mingxin hadn’t been tempted away from her in the circle due to both the environment of the entertainment industry and the past trauma. And if Ye Mingxin was unaware of this past trauma, she would have failed to see the hole the MC was sinking into and not known how to address the issue. Not to mention she’d also have probably been hurt deeply if the MC believed the rumors. and while to be hurt and bothered by someone who didn’t trust you is natural and could even be a turn off for me, knowing that the MC had a traumatic event related to cheating I can understand why that would become a psychological shadow that rationale could not get through and would hurt her relationships so both sides have both the right and wrong. its an issue that still can be worked through if they were actually able to talk through everything and find something still worth salvaging.
