I woke up to find I have a child Ch.13

Chapter 13: Melon seed eating masses

When they returned home, Han Fexiu fell asleep as soon as her head hit the pillow. She had received too much psychological simulation these past few days so her mind and body were exhausted.

When she woke up the next day and finished eating breakfast, she saw Ye Mingxin sitting on the couch with her head down while looking at her phone. The way she sat was always proper and elegant, even when relaxing on the couch. She was holding her phone about 30 centimeters from her chest and diligently scrolling through the screen, reading each word on the page.

Han Fexiu sat on the edge of the dining table and propped her chin on her hand as she observed Ye Mingxin. The more she looked at Ye Mingxin, the more charming she felt the scene before her was.

“Mommy, I want to go to Jin Beibei*! I want to play in the ball pit!” (*T/N: Jin Beibei is like an arcade/kids play area in China)

Yiyi rushed into Ye Mingxin’s arms and ruined the charming atmosphere. The picturesque scenery quickly disappeared.

Ye Mingxin picked up her daughter who had almost fallen over, “We can’t go today, we have to take Mama to the hospital for a check-up. How about we go next week instead?”

What does check-up mean? Yiyi has no concept of it. For her, she simply had to follow the orders the adults gave her. Even if Ye Mingxin was to bring her to a nightclub, she would follow obediently and without objection.

Lan Zhu and Qi Yu also went to the hospital with them. They used the medical staff’s entrance and parked in their underground parking lot. Qi Yu originally wanted Ye Mingxin to wait in the car, but the woman refused. Ye Mingxin had given the hospital employees a heads-up before they arrived so they did not have to wait in a line or fill out any forms. Therefore, they were directly led into a private room without having to do anything.

The examination was done quickly and efficiently and soon a diagnosis was made. The doctor who carried out the examination was a famous neurologist known throughout the country. The diagnosis he gave was the same as the private hospital had given. He couldn’t find anything either and the most he could say was that Han Feixu was a little bit anemic.

Ye Mingxin could not understand this diagnosis, “How can a perfectly healthy person suddenly forget years’ worth of memories? How can you not find the cause for this?”

The old neurologist was also feeling rather vexed. He has practiced medicine for so many years and he has never seen such a situation before. Han Feixu aroused his fighting spirit and renewed his scientific curiosity. If it were not for her special status, he would have already set up a research group to analyze her condition.

Yiyi was sitting in Lan Zhu’s lap. She had been listening to the entire time and it took her a while before she was able to somewhat understand the words the doctor used.

She raised her head and looked at Han Feixu with a panicked expression, “Mama, you don’t remember me anymore?”

Hearing this question, Han Feixu turned to look at Ye Mingxin who paused before walking over and squatting in front of Yiyi, “It’s not that your Mama doesn’t remember you, in fact, how can she forget Yiyi? You’re her precious baby. What she doesn’t remember are the little things that have happened in the past and some other details. Yiyi, you must help your Mama remember, alright?”

Han Feixu felt her heart jump into her throat because Yiyi’s current expression looked like she was about to cry. But Yiyi’s expression relaxed after hearing Ye Mingxin’s words. To the little kid, as long as her mother remembers her, she doesn’t care about anything else.

A child’s world is both so innocent yet so cruel = =

She nodded furiously, “Mama, I will help you! I will help you defeat this disease!”

Han Fexiu felt that it was a little funny. Despite everyone telling her how smart Yiyi is, isn’t she just a 4-year old little bean sprout in the end? They fooled her easily with just a few words, why did she even bother being so nervous?

However, perhaps because blood is thicker than water, although she has only known Yiyi for two days, she did not want to make this child sad.

Her daughter must spend every day happily and without worry.

After coming out of the hospital, Ye Mingxin asked for the keys to Qi Yu’s Audi. She told Han Feixu to get in the car and then said to Qiyu and Lan Zhu, “I’ll trouble the two of you to send Yiyi home. Qi-ge, you can go home and take a break after dropping her off, but Lan Zhu, you should stay and play with Yiyi. We won’t be home until later tonight.”

“Alright!” Lan Zhu happily agreed. She liked taking care of Yiyi the most. “Then can I take Yiyi out to play today? I still have more than 300 yuan left in my balance from my Jin Beibei card. It’ll expire soon too if I don’t use it in the next few days.”

Jin Beibei is a large family game center where children from the ages of 2-16 can find things to play with. Lan Zhu took Yiyi there once but according to Yiyi, Lan Zhu was even happier than her to play there. She apparently played a whack-a-mole game dozens of times to win Yiyi a yellow minion keychain. (T/N: the yellow minions from the movie despicable me)

She had just yawned and someone passed over a pillow willingly.* (T/N: an idiom that means everything is going your way or your plans are moving along smoothly.)

Ye Mingxin smiled lightly, “Ok, go ahead. I will reimburse you later when I return.”

Although Lan Zhu was willing to spend her own money today to play with the little princess, it was even better if someone else was willing to foot the bill. Lan Zhu smiled, “Then let’s go.”

Qi Yu drove another car over and soon the three of them were gone. Ye Mingxin got into the Audi where Han Feixu was waiting patiently.

“Did you cry that day because of mom and dad?”

Han Feixu’s expression turned blank for a second before a second later she realized that Ye Mingxin was talking about her parents.

“….En.”

Han Feixu lowered her head and stared at her hands. Even now, when someone mentioned her parents, she would feel a painful jolt in her heart. Her heart would become sore with pain and so she forced herself to not think about it. However, her efforts were useless. The voices and smiles of her parents were still circling in her brain like an awful curse. With just one little push, she would burst into tears.

She may look fine now, but that was because she was enduring the pain.

Ye Mingxin looked at Han Feixu’s tightly pressed lips and didn’t speak. She drove the car out of the parking lot and started driving in the opposite direction of their house.

“Where are we going?” Han Feixu asked Ye Mingxin as the scenery changed around her.

“We’re going to see mom and dad.”

Han Feixu’s eyes widened slightly and the hands on her knees tightened, wrinkling her clothes.

Han Feixu’s parents are buried in Wan’an Cemetery with the Fragrant Hills Park to the west and the Summer Palace to the east. No matter from which angle one looked at it, it was a place with great scenery and feng shui. It was a resting place for great and exceptional people.

Ye Mingxin took her to the area where her parents were buried together. She bowed towards Han Tianyuan and his wife’s tombstone and then moved to the side to leave a space for Han Feixu. She moved silently to sit under an old tree in the distance so that she could watch over Han Feixu. From where she sat, she could see Han Feixu’s figure but she cannot see her face nor can she hear what Han Feixu was saying.

This was to give Han Feixu a space to cry as loudly as she wanted to. Han Feixu cried silently at first and then started sobbing hoarsely before losing energy and finally just whimpered quietly. About an hour later, Ye Mignxin walked forward to help Han Feixu up. Han Feixu was draped over her parents’ tombstone and had to lean against Ye Mingxin’s shoulder to stand on unsteady legs.

How many tears can a person shed? To cry bitterly is also a painful way for a person to vent out their feelings. After crying so much, her congested and conflicted heart felt much better, but after crying for so long, her emotions were in a mess. She was still choking back sobs that threatened to spill at any time. She looked up at Ye Mingxin and through her teary eyes, she realized that Ye Mingxin’s gaze right now was very gentle.

The current Han Feixu couldn’t care less about her image. Thus, her hair was messed up, her face dirtied and her clothes wrinkled. Ye Mingxin brushed the fallen hair out of Han Feixu’s face and looked at that cat-like face in front of her with a faint smile, but there was a deep sadness in her eyes.

She gently wiped the tear stains from the corners of Han Feixu’s eyes and then said in a soft voice, “You’re still crying? You look so unsightly, if mom were to see this she would scold you again.”

Han Feixu was stunned into silence.

Her tears were shed for her parents who were separated from her, but Ye Mingxin’s grief came from the distress at seeing her crying.

The tears that had stopped flowing started again.

Although she still felt sad, there was still a bit of comfort in the sadness. At least, she was not such a pitiful person that no one loves her.

If it were Shen Sangluo, she would never have let Han Feixu go to the cemetery to see her parents. At least not this soon. Her philosophy was to deal with things gently and slowly, but Ye Mingxin was the opposite. She was a more decisive person that prefers to fight poison with poison.

Sometimes, fighting poison with poison was more useful than waiting for time to heal the wound. For the first time in two days, Han Feixu looked more energetic.

Han Feixu stayed at home for a few more days and now that Ye Mingxin knew that she had lost her memories, she didn’t let Han Feixu pick up Yiyi anymore. This task was handed over to Lan Zhu and the housekeeper instead.

During the day she would go online to catch up on ten years worth of lost knowledge and then at night she would happily play with Yiyi. Meanwhile, during this time, Ye Mingxin treated her with a ‘not too close, but not too distant’ attitude. Sometimes Han Feixu felt that Ye Mingxin treated her very warmly but then in the next moment, Ye Mingxin would treat her with an indifferent attitude that made her think that the previous warmth was just her imagination.

When Shen Sangluo heard her feelings, she looked at Han Feixu with a look of disappointment, “Idiot! She’s clearly ‘boiling the frog with lukewarm water’!” (T/N: A Chinese analogy where if you put a frog in a pot of boiling water, he’ll jump right out, but just raise the temperature slowly and he’ll let himself be cooked. Basically means to not frighten off the other party but instead slowly escalate until the other party realizes they’ve fallen into your trap but by then it’s too late.)

Han Feixu was taken aback by her scolding.

Today, Shen Sangluo had a lot of free time so she asked Han Feixu to come out and see her, but the more she listened to the details of Han Feixu and Ye Mingxin’s relationship, the angrier she became, “I beg of you, can you please focus on the main point? You say that I have not improved, but I see that you haven’t either? When will you ever correct your short attention span and your tendency to have disorganized thoughts? Will you ever break away from these weaknesses of yours!”

Han Feixu stayed silent. Since Shen Sangluo hates Ye Mingxin that much, then she will not mention Ye Mingxin ever again in front of her.

Although she no longer mentioned Ye Mingxin, Shen Sangluo would not let the matter go, “Just think about it. You were so determined before. You had hardened your heart to divorce her before, so there must have been a reason! If she didn’t do things that made your heart freeze, would you have chosen to divorce her? Do not be fooled by the sugar-coated bullets before you, it’s all a conspiracy! A conspiracy, I say!” (T/N: ‘sugar-coated bullets’ was an expression used by Mao Zedong to refer to the method of using a deceptive image to rope in and corrupt the enemy.)

Han Feixu set down her cup of coffee, “Then tell me what the reasons were. If I knew the reason why I decided to divorce her, I wouldn’t be easily fooled by her anymore.”

Shen Sangluo “….” If she knew the reason, wouldn’t she have told her a long time ago?

Once their conversation was finished, Shen Sangluo got up and left with a frustrated expression. She said she still had work to do and left Han Feixu behind in the cafe.

Shen Sangluo wasn’t actually angry at Han Feixu over these small details. The problem was that when Ye Mingxin found out that Han Feixu had lost her memory, she told Han Feixu to stay at home lest outsiders knew about her condition and cause trouble for her.

This made the hair on the back of her neck stand up. She understood that this was just a delaying tactic by Ye Mingxin, a way to stall out the divorce and lay her trap. Yet, Han Feixu actually agreed!

Of course, Han Feixu gave a very good reason for this. She doesn’t know anything about acting, so how can she go out and become an actress? Previously, she had settled on a one-week deadline before making her comeback because she was under pressure to divorce Ye Mingxin quickly and win custody over Yiyi. But now, according to Ye Mingxin’s actions, they were no longer in a hurry to divorce so why would she need to rush a comeback? Han Feixu had thought it out well.

After drinking her cup of coffee, Han Feixu decided to go shopping. Since the current her is so rich, she might as well make the best of life and buy everything she wants without worrying about the price tag!

So she happily walked out of the coffee shop but before she could even enter the first boutique, a crowd blocked her way and a sharp voice rang out,

“I am someone you cannot afford to offend! Let go of me right now! So what if I hit her, this is legitimate self-defense! Stop taking pictures! Why are you taking pictures!”

A pair of lovers in the crowd who had witnessed everything started to talk. The girl said to her boyfriend standing next to her, “She’s hitting too fiercely, yet nobody can stop her. From the looks of it, they’re going to be trending in the news later.”

Han Feixu stared at the crowd. She walked two steps forward and leaned in close to see what was going on. Many people next to her were taking pictures with their mobile phones of the scene in the center. An old woman was lying and bleeding on the floor while two men were holding back a young woman who continued to struggle and flail her arms. Han Feixu only glanced at the scene in front of her for two seconds before leaving.

The security guards were already here so it was useless for her to try and do anything, but before she left, she gave her handkerchief to the old woman and told her to wipe her blood with it. The old woman’s face was just too bloody, like a tomato that has been smashed open.

The young woman really was a little too heavy-handed.

Han Feixu left after giving the old woman her handkerchief. This event did not affect her mood at all as she shopped around the mall and brought seven or eight shopping bags home with her. The final bill came out to be 28,000 yuan (abt. $4300).

Han Feixu was satisfied by this amount and did not spend much more. After all, she is a person with a child now, so she can’t just recklessly spend her money and she must leave some for Yiyi.

When she returned home, Yiyi was already asleep and Ye Mingxin was attending some sort of cocktail party. It was ten in the evening and Han Fiexu sat cross-legged on the sofa as she lost herself into the world of Weibo.

However, she barely scrolled through Weibo for half a minute when she found her name was trending on it.

Headline: Internet celebrity beats up an old lady and shouts, “I am someone you cannot afford to offend!”

A verified account reposted: “I might have cataracts in my eyes but look, that fourth person from the left among the melon seed-eating masses, doesn’t she look like Han Feixu??? [Question mark emoji]
