Chapter 16: Ex-girlfriend 

Han Feixu picked up the first script, flipped about two pages, and then put it down again. She picked up the second script, did the same thing, and only read a few pages before putting it down. After repeating this a few more times, her eyes suddenly lit up on a particular script. 

She glanced at Liang Zhu: “This one seems quite interesting.” 

Liang Zhu leaned forward and read the title printed on the cover of the script. Her expression fell flat, “I gave you that one by mistake. This script should’ve been sent over to Qi Yu.” 

She grabbed the script back and then gave a quick explanation when she saw the puzzled look in Han Feixu’s eyes, “This is a highly-invested big production that will start shooting in the second half of the year. We won’t be able to make it in time. Wait another year and I’ll find you an even better script for you to work with.” 

Technically, when she said they wouldn’t be able to make it in time, she didn’t literally mean they didn’t have enough time but that Han Feixu didn’t have enough time to build up her skills. Although Han Feixu really likes the script, she needs to stick to something she can do with her current level. 

Han Feixu understood this fact and didn’t argue with Liang Zhu as she continued looking through the other scripts. 

The scripts Liang Zhu gave her were all for movies. Each script was about a hundred pages at most and could easily be skimmed through. Half an hour later, Han Feixu’s page-turning suddenly slowed down. 

She raised her head and showed the title on the cover of the script to Liang Zhu, “What about this one?”

《Barrier Lake》

(T/N: A barrier lake is also known as a landslide dam, basically a lake that is naturally formed due to dams/barriers formed by mother nature’s landslides. Also the name of a reservoir in Canada )

For a second there, Liang Zhu couldn’t remember where she got the script. She grabbed the script and flipped through it, before landing on the page where the screenwriter and casting director’s names were. They were people she recognized and knew, but most of their past productions have been pretty mediocre so they weren’t exactly famous in the entertainment circle. 

Liang Zhu nodded, “I will ask them about it later. Meanwhile, you should go back first and watch your movies. When the contract is ready, I’ll notify you and you can come in and sign it.” 

Han Feixu nodded in agreement and walked out with Wei Xun following behind her. Not long after they walked out, a young woman appeared in front of her. Although Han Feixu’s gaze did not change, the other party’s expression showed shock and some pleasant surprise. 

“Han Feixu?!” 

She was already halfway out the door, but when she heard the other party call her name, she quickly stepped back and smiled at the woman, “Good morning.” 

“Good morning……” Su Jue felt that this sudden greeting was rather strange, but since the other party took the initiative, of course, she had to reply, “You’re a very famous person on the internet right now! I just saw your picture on Weibo in today’s edition of the People’s Daily!” (T/N: The People’s Daily is the largest newspaper/media group in China.)

Han Feixu smiled politely, “Really? I haven’t read today’s edition yet, I’ll take a look at it later.”

Su Jue also smiled back and then looked Han Feixu up and down, “You’ve changed so much! If it weren’t for my habit of scrolling through Weibo every day, I would not have recognized you! I heard from Liang-jie that you’ve been studying abroad? How was it? Are you considered a veteran actress now?” 

Although Han Feixu seemed calm on the surface, she was panicking on the inside. 

Who is this woman and could she stop talking with her?!!

“You flatter me. Although I studied abroad, I haven’t really learned much. I feel the same as before.” 

Su Jue rolled her eyes in an exaggerated manner, “There you go being modest again.” 

“Ai, since you’re back, will you be attending Xu Zhiyin’s birthday party on the third of next month? It’s happening right here and there will be a lot of people, mostly artists from the company. It’ll be a good opportunity to network and meet some new people. Oh, right, do you know who Xu Zhiyin is?” 

The smile on Han Feixu’s face was quite stiff. Should she or should she not know who that is? 

Liang Zhu heard the movements at the door and finally came out to rescue her. 

“Su Jue, what are you standing there for? Come in already! Feixu, remember to complete the task I assigned to you.” 

Liang Zhu returned to her office after speaking and Su Jue had no other choice but to follow. Before she left, she quickly put a takeaway box full of western looking food into Han Feixu’s hands, “These are some waffles sold in my shop, they’re blueberry flavored and super delicious. Take some back with you and try it. Alright, I’ll be leaving first, see you later!” 

Su Jue then hurried after Liang Zhu and disappeared into the office. Han Feixu finally breathed a sigh of relief, and then quickly walked towards the elevator. As she walked, she said to Wei Xun, “Hurry, hurry, we must leave this shady place before we get into any more trouble!”

Wei Xun: “…..” 

Han Feixu finally felt safe when they returned home. On her way out of the company, a few people turned to stare at her and seemed to recognize her. Fortunately, none of them tried to strike up a conversation with her like Su Jue did.

She sat down with a plate of waffles to watch her assigned movie. She was about halfway through when Liang Zhu called, “This won’t do, I’ll need to find you an assistant and send her over.” 

This assistant must be someone trustworthy and familiar with the company and the entire entertainment circle. That way, even if Han Feixu doesn’t remember who the star in front of her is, the assistant by her side can remind her. 

Han Feixu pressed the pause button on the laptop in front of her, “Why can’t we just publicize my condition?” 

“No, we can’t do that.” Liang Zhu unhesitantly rejected her suggestion, “Do you know how much people hate the cliche and crappy amnesia plot? Not to mention, you don’t even have an official diagnosis to provide it and even if you did have an official diagnosis and paperwork from the hospital, no one will believe you.” 

There was no response from the other side of the phone. Liang Zhu thought that Han Feixu was feeling downhearted again….when in reality, she was stuffing her face with the legendary, super delicious, blueberry waffle. It was so delicious that she couldn’t spare even a second to answer Liang Zhu.  = =

“Don’t worry too much about it. I’m sending you an assistant right away. Your assistant will act as insurance, and your first line of defense. And as for your second line of defense….we must take actions in light of the current circumstances.” 

Han Feixu swallowed the waffle in her mouth, “What do you mean?” 

“We gotta re-customize your public persona! Your previous image was a rising newcomer with amazing talent, and now we’ll add to that image to cover up your amnesia problem. How about someone who suffers from face blindness and extreme forgetfulness? What do you think, pretty good, right?” 

……not good at all.

After Wei Xun started working, Lan Zhu was relieved of her duties of picking up Yiyi. When it was almost time for school to end, Wei Xun and Han Feixu went to the kindergarten together, and then Wei Xun would drive them home. 

Since Yiyi had met Wei Xun this morning, she wasn’t surprised to see him 

When the car door opened, she obediently crawled inside. There was a child seat on the back seat for her and she buckled the seat belt by herself before she started to talk loudly about what happened in kindergarten today.

Yiyi never had this type of chatterbox habit before, but ever since she learned about Han Feixu’s memory loss, she became a tiny chatterbox and was constantly trying to introduce everything around her to her mother. 

For the first day or two, Han Feixu was very moved by this gesture. After about ten days to almost half a month, however, she was starting to get a headache. 

If this continues, will her daughter become the next Tang Seng? （T/N: A famous monk character from “the Journey to the West” who is known for giving long-winded lectures. ) 

Although Han Feixu was exhausted by Yiyi’s constant chattering, Wei Xun, who was sitting next to her, had different thoughts. Han Feixu was leaning against the car window, holding her head up helplessly, when she saw in the window’s reflection that Wei Xun’s normally indifferent square face actually had a trace of a smile on it. 

However, perhaps he hadn’t smiled for so long, so even when he did, his smile was a little stiff. But at least he was in a good mood. 

When a 24-year-old young man meets a cute little child, it is natural for them to smile at the child’s cuteness. 

Unfortunately, Wei Xun had the face of an uncle in his forties so when he smiled, it developed into a weird pervert’s smile instead.

Han Fexiu nodded and the unguarded expression full of tender affection she only showed in front of Yiyi was still on her face as she talked, “I did. Liang-jie said she would arrange it for me. Oh, and she accepted a web show for me as well.” 

When Ye Mingxin heard the name of the web show from Han Feixu, her brows furrowed slightly, “I’ve heard that the reviews for that show aren’t too good.” 

Han Feixu had also checked the reviews on the Internet earlier. The show was updated weekly and always invited three guests. The main guest would always be put over the fire and grilled excruciatingly. Web shows had more leeway than a typical variety show and sometimes the host would ask very controversial questions. These were traps that the host set up to anger the guests and provoke reactions from them. For this reason, this web show had a very high view count.

(*T/N: the “important” male/female roles is the shortened translation. If one wants to stay true to the text, the actual translation should be “the roles of male/female lead, second male/female lead, third male/female lead, and fourth male/female lead”.)

Who knows how the director was able to do it, but he was actually able to invite Jiang Lingyan to direct the show of 《I am the Protagonist》. Therefore, this variety show will definitely not be bad in terms of production.  

Now it made more sense. If one wants to be cast in 《Barrier Lake》, they must first participate in 《I am the Protagoniste》. The stars who are selected in the end will become famous and their fame will affect the film. Liang Zhu also thought this was a good opportunity to kill two birds with one stone. Regardless if she gets chosen or not, as long as Han Feixu participates in the variety show, it would be good for her fame. Han Feixu’s eyes widened. She went through her memories, but she can’t remember a person named Jiang Linyan among her relatives. 

Seeing her puzzled look, Liang Zhu sighed. Fortunately, the assistant will be arriving tomorrow. 

“Stop thinking about it. Jiang Lingyan is Ye Mingxin’s childhood friend and Shen Sangluo’s ex-girlfriend. I heard that she still can’t forget Shen Sangluo, even now. So just for the sake of Shen Sangluo’s face, you will definitely be able to enter the show.” 

Han Feixu was shocked to the core, “Wait, what?!!!!”

Shen Sangluo, argues with a flushed face and blue veins popping on her forehead, “A one-night stand can’t be counted as an ex-girlfriend! …..one-night stand! ….How can a one night’s worth of affairs be counted as having an ex-girlfriend!” She proceeds to mumble a series of incoherent words, such as “never changes”, “beautiful”, “I reckon”, and so on. The surrounding people laughed uproariously and a happy atmosphere filled the air. (T/N: the words really were pretty incoherent and doesn’t make sense without context so I just used direct translation)
