Chapter 17: Same frame

Han Feixu immediately called Deputy Section Chief Shen to verify this new piece of info. 

When she told Shen Sangluo what she heard, the woman who was sitting in her office almost jumped three feet into the air. 

“Don’t listen to her nonsense! Who is her ex-girlfriend, at best we are just acquaintances!” 

Han Feixu: “So you did not have a relationship with her?

“No!” 

“You really didn’t?” 

“I really didn’t!” 

“Shen Sangluo.” 

“What?” 

“You’re picking at the edges of your chair right now, aren’t you?” 

“…..” 

Shen Sangluo raised her head and tried to see if there was a monitor installed on the ceiling. 

Han Feixu laughed arrogantly as she sat in the car, “I knew there was something fishy. So, tell me, what exactly happened?” 

Everyone is an adult now, who doesn’t have some sort of black history in their relationships?  

As the saying goes ‘birds of a feather flock together’. Shen Shangluo and Han Feixu have been good friends for so many years now. Although their personalities are different, their innate character is very similar and in terms of love and relationships, they were both respectively not very good at it. 

Although Han Feixu may have gotten married due to “destined fate”, if she had never met Ye Mingxin, she would be just like Shen Sangluo. A single woman in her late twenties who’s been flying solo her entire life. And although Han Feixu was able to make one peach blossom bloom, it was a rather rotten peach blossom. (T/N: peach blossom is slang for “love affair” or “relationship”. If you make a peach blossom bloom it means you are able to create a love relationship between you and another person. If a peach blossom is closed, it means you do not have a relationship with that person. A rotten peach blossom means a sour relationship or a bad relationship.) 

Shen Shangluo stammered, “W-what do mean fishy? I am an honest person….why are you asking so much? Have I ever asked you so many questions about your affairs?” 

“You definitely asked quite a bit, that’s for sure.” 

“……”

Under Han Feixu’s pestering, Shen Sangluo finally told the truth. Meanwhile, Wen Xun was driving the car with great focus. The voice of Han Feixu talking on the phone was a messy background noise for him, and he didn’t even pay attention to her words until she started laughing. 

“One….one night stand?!! Even you have times where you f*ck up! Hahahahahahaha!” 

She couldn’t stop laughing. Han Feixu never thought that Shen Sangluo would actually do a one-night stand, and according to her own words, Shen Sangluo was the one who left after eating her fill. Apparently she woke up first and then ran away as fast as she could, taking the dreaded walk of shame. 

Shen Sangluo’s face darkened to the color of the bottom of a black pot as she listened to the cheerful laughter coming from the other side. 

Finally, after Han Feixu felt like she had laughed enough, she wiped away her tears and then cleared her throat as she said in a whisper, “Deputy Section Chief Shen, you’re quite an amazing person.” 

“….The point is, she is not my ex-girlfriend! Liang Zhu’s words are completely and utterly ridiculous! What ‘can’t forget about her’, she’s simply exaggerating too much!” 

Han Feisu curled up in the passenger seat and rubbed the leather decoration on the car door with her index finger, “So you’re saying that after you slept with her and abandoned her, she didn’t try calling you again?” 

Slept with her and abandoned her…these words really were too…..fitting = =

Shen Sangluo meekly replied, “She only tried about five or six times……only five or six times, this couldn’t be counted as being unable to forget me, right?” 

Hmm, it indeed did not seem to count. 

But Han Feixu felt that something was wrong and so she asked, “When did you sleep with her?”

Shen Sangluo: “Last month.” 

Han Feixu: “…….” And you say this doesn’t count!!!!!

Fresh and new gossip has always been the downfall of many women. Han Feixu didn’t even return home, and went straight to Shen Sangluo’s, preparing to wring out every detail from the other party. 

Shen Sangluo worked like a dog at work, yet she had to buy dinner for two after and then return home to suffer an interrogation from her friend. Sheng Sanglup believed that out of all the hard-working office workers out there, not a single one of them had it as hard as her. 

Finally, after a few back and forths between the two, Han Feixu was able to figure out the ins and outs of this matter. 

Shen Sangluo and Jiang Lingyan had known each other for a long time. Apparently, when Han Feixu and Ye Mingxin got married, there wasn’t a big ceremony and it was a simple wedding at the Ye family’s old residence. They were married under the blessings of Ye Mingxin’s paternal grandparents. They had only invited their closest friends and relatives, ate a meal, and then the wedding was over. This was also where Shen Sangluo and Jiang Lingyan first met each other. 

They only had a nodding acquaintance with each other at the time. The two of them didn’t really interact with each other until this year. 

Shen Sangluo spoke in a weary tone, as if she had seen all the ups and downs of life, “If it weren’t for you, we would not have said a single word to each other. When you came back at the beginning of the year, if it wasn’t about the divorce then it was one thing after another. Who told me to be such a good friend? It was my duty to help you.” 

Han Feixu resolutely refused to carry this black pot*, “You don’t need to do a one-night stand to help me.” (T/N: “black pot” means blame and here Han Feixu refuses to take the blame)

“…….” But it really was because she was overly enthusiastic to help Han Feixu that she met with Jiang Lingyan.  

Jiang Lingyan is a good friend of Ye Mingxin and Shen Sangluo is Han Feixu’s good friend. Han Feixu and Ye Mingxin were going to divorce, and so Jiang Lingyan tried to talk to Han Feixu on behalf of her friend but Han Feixu could not be persuaded. So she could seek out Shen Sangluo for help instead. Although Shen Sangluo supported Han Feixu’s choice to divorce very much, at the time, another argument had exploded between the troublesome couple and so she wanted Jiang Lingyan to help her take care of it. So she agreed to the other’s invitation and they met up at a bar. 

As a result, stuff happened. To make a long story short, when Shen Sangluo woke up again, it was the next morning. 

Even more unfortunately, is that Shen Sangluo did not have the same problem that the female leads often have in the TV dramas. While the female lead usually does not remember anything after getting drunk, Shen Sangluo remembered everything and very clearly at that. She remembered how she forcibly stripped off Jiang Lingyan’s clothes like a female hoodlum. The other party clearly tried to stop her, yet she had insisted and pushed her until finally Jiang Lingyan finally agreed and then the other party decided to take advantage of the situation for her own benefit. And then……

Shen Sangluo sighed deeply, stood up, and walked into the bedroom. She fumbled around for a long time before taking out a carefully locked up box and then taking out a rolled up scroll from within the box. 

Han Feixu looked at her with confusion as Shen Sangluo unfurled the croll. On the scroll was a few characters written in the proper Shou Jin Ti* script and it also held the personal characteristics of Shen Sangluo’s handwriting. (T/N: Shou Jin Ti (瘦金体) or thin gold style is a a kind of script style invented by Emperor Huizong of Song. Very pretty style, see picture below.)

Shen Sangluo: “This was written after I got home that day.”

There were only seven characters on the scroll–

“A single mistake leads to a lifetime of regret.” 

(T/N: 失足成千古恨, ik my eng translation isn’t exactly 7 words, I tried but frickin prepositions. )

Han Feixu was very considerate and didn’t laugh out loud. She held back, and prepared to laugh as much as she could later when she stepped out the door. 

Shen Sangluo gloomily rolled up the scroll, “If you want to participate in her variety show, I’m fine with it. As long as you don’t drag me into it with you.” 

Han Feixu coughed and patted her shoulder heavily, “Thank you for your hard work.” 

When she walked out of Shen Sangluo’s place that day, Han Feixu held herself against the wall as she laughed until her stomach hurt before she finally returned to the car.

The next day, she went to the show that was shooting in the afternoon. In the morning, she went to the company and Ye Mingxin went with her. The two of them took two different cars before they arrived at the parking lot. They both got off and then Ye Mingxin asked her, “When are you coming home tonight?” 

The program would finish shooting after six o’clock in the evening and calculating the time it takes to make a return trip, she replied, “Seven o’clock.”

Ye Mingxin nodded, “I will be returning later, about one in the morning. You should eat early and get Yiyi to bed early as well. She stayed up too late last night, all the way till half past nine.” 

Han Feixu didn’t know how to raise a child so she agreed to everything Ye Mingxin said. Meanwhile, Qi Yu, Lan Zhu, and Wei Xun all stood to the side and watched. Lan Zhu tilted her head as she looked at them, “They really do look like an old married couple. Now I kinda hope that Han Feixu never gets her memory back.” 

Qi Yu, “This is not something we can control. Right, Wei Xun?”

Wei Xun: “Please do not talk about the boss’ affairs during work hours.” 

……So they can talk about it outside of working hours???

They got on the elevator and Ye Mingxin went to the 18th floor, and Han Feixu went to the 16th floor. This time, she was not the only one in Liang Zhu’s office, in fact, there were two other people. The two strangers looked to be around the same age, but because one of them was too good-looking, it made the other look like a Chinese white cabbage in comparison. 

Liang Zhu introduced them: “Let me introduce everyone. This is our company’s newest artist, Ren Shuang. Ren Shuang, this is Han Feixu.” 

Ren Shuang smiled in an easy manner, “Hello, Han-jie.” 

Ren Shuang had just graduated from university. No matter if it was in terms of age or seniority, she had to respectfully call Han Feixu ‘jie’. Han Feixu replied with a prefunctury greeting. Then Ren Shuang picked up the bag on the table and said, “Then I will leave first. Liang-jie, I’ll have to trouble you and leave this matter to you.” 

Liang Zhu agreed readily, “No problem, I will definitely help you.” 

After Ren Shuang left, Liang Zhu sat back on the sofa and said to Han Feixu with a mysterious expression: “This little girl is quite amazing. She has only been here for a short while, but she’s more energetic than me in her work. I’ve only taken her under my wing for about a month, so I still haven’t figured out her temperament yet. Anyhow, according to her positive attitude just now, within half a year we should be able to see the results.” 

“What results?” 

The person next to her who had no sense of existence until now, finally spoke up in a cold voice, “Either she will become famous or she’ll disappear without a trace.” 

Han Feixu jumped and looked at the other. She waited for Liang Zhu to introduce her but the two of them just sat there, looking innocently at her, as if saying with their eyes, ‘what are you waiting for?’

Finally, Han Feixu had to take the initiative, “Hello, who are you?”

Zhong Yuanyuan looked taken aback for a moment and then made an enlightened expression, “Oh, right, of course you wouldn’t remember me. I am Yuanyuan, Zhong Yuanyuan. I worked as your assistant for half a year and then was transferred over to Lin Yi. My contract is about to expire and I need to find another star to work with, so I’ve come back to work with you again.”

Although Zhong Yuanyuan said she had worked for Han Feixu before for half a year, it really was much less than that. When Han Feixu’s parents got in an accident, she had just started working for about two months. Later, after Han Feixu got married, went back to school, and then went abroad, this assistant was no longer needed. 

However, just by coincidence, when Zhong Yuanyuan was looking for work and considering changing companies, Liang Zhu handed her an olive branch. Although they had not cooperated for long, apparently Liang Zhu had a good impression of her. According to Liang Zhu, Zhong Yuanyuan was born to work as an assistant in the entertainment industry.

Ever since Han Feixu got popular again, someone from the company’s senior management came to Liang Zhu and asked her to re-sign a contract with Han Feixu as soon as possible. Liang Zhu refused. She hadn’t talked it over with Han Feixu yet and she knows that she is being a little selfish but…..Gan Shi company’s treatment of their artists is not the best in the industry. Although they are large in scale with more artists and more staff, the corresponding resources were naturally less. 

The company has four big pillars and most resources reside in the hands of these pillars, especially their biggest pillar of support: Ye Mingxin. Almost all the best resources would be sent to her. If they were to re-sign a contract with the company, Ye Mingxin will definitely try to find a way to help Han Feixu. However, in Liang Zhu’s opinion, Han Feixu was good enough to stand on her own. Liang Zhu did not feel ashamed at all of this matter of secretly abducting Ye Mingxin’s wife to another company. Emotions are emotions and work is work. As an agent, she must of course put her artist’s future first!

As for the shooting of the show later in the afternoon, Liang Zhu was going to go with Han Feixu, but an artist under her who was working in Zhejiang was suddenly injured. When Liang Zhu heard this, she hurriedly bought the first ticket to Zhejiang. Before leaving, she reminded Han Feixu to be careful, and most importantly to listen to Zhong Yuanyuan. 

Zhong Yuanyuan looks very average and she is a bit chubby, but she smiles very sweetly and makes people feel at ease. After getting in the car, she asked Han Feixu, “You married Ye Mingxin?”

Han Feixu blinked: “Yes.” 

Zhong Yuanyuan sighed, “Now that I think back on it, I really didn’t believe you back then. At that time, I thought you were too young, and you were just playing around. I thought that when you really entered the entertainment industry, you two would definitely go your separate ways. In the end, it was I who made an error in judgment.” 

No, you didn’t make an error, they were indeed about to separate.

This man is the content director. (T/N: Idk much about the entertainment industry, but according to google content directors are “directors” in charge of a company’s content marketing efforts including blogs, social media, articles, and written materials.)

Han Feixu always thought that those who could become directors are amazing people, but this is not correct. In fact, one variety show can have hundreds of people that could be called “directors.” There are content directors, technical directors, assistant directors and shooting directors are all called directors.

And the content director is actually the lowest-ranking staff member among the group of directors. 

Zhong Yuanyuan frowned. When the guest of the show arrives, not to mention the head director, even the producer has to come out and greet them. By only having a content director greet them meant this show was looking down on Han Feixu. They did not respect her. 

However, Han Feixu was ignorant of these tiny details and the meanings behind them. Zhong Yuanyuan also couldn’t tell her with so many people around them and so could only quietly follow Han Feixu into the dressing room. 

There was another guest in the room. Liang Zhu has said before that in addition to Han Feixu, the other two guests are celebrities named Gao Changxiu and Yin Jiahe. Gao Changxiu is a fresh-faced young idol who recently participated in a commercial movie and became quite famous. Usually he would appear in the hot searches every two or three days. However, recently the Shi Xi cheating scandal was still dominating the headlines so he hasn’t been trending for a quite some time now. 

It is estimated that after recording the show today, his company will buy a few hot searches for him and boost him back into the ranks of the famous again. 

Meanwhile Yin Jiahe is about the same age as Han Feixu. She is a national gymnast who changed careers. In the《Cold and Windy Night》series, she always played the second female lead. The netizens liked to joke that the second female lead role was as strong as iron and the female lead role was like running water.  There were a total of 4 movies in the series and the female lead was changed every movie but the second female lead was always played by her. According to the rumours, the author of the 《Cold and Windy Night》novel particularly liked her, and believed that the second female lead had to be played by her. 

In addition to the《Cold and Windy Night》series, she also acted in several movies and TV series. However, the TV series ratings were all mediocre and the box office sales for the movies were all mediocre as well. “Alright, Han-jie,” Gao Changxiu agreed enthusiastically without a hint of awkwardness, “You can just call me by my name.” (T/N: He uses the respectful version of “you” here.) 

Gao Changxiu was surrounded by four people. At first, Han Feixu was worried that he would try to intimidate her by acting haughty and arrogant. However, she never expected him to be so easy to get along with. 

Gao Changxiu was just like his name*, a resourceful and clever young man, he seemed to share a common point with everyone and got along with anyone he spoke to. Han Feixu chatted with him for a while, and was captured by his charming personality. While the two of them were putting on makeup, they chatted a little and waited for Yin Jiahe to arrive. (T/N: Gao Changxiu’s name is 高长秀 and the author uses the last two characters of his name to make a pun with the saying“长袖善舞” which is an idiom that essentially means “to be resourceful.” Long story short, just know that his name basically means elegant, handsome, and resourceful.)

The shooting would begin at 2:30 and it was already 2:15. Although Han Feixu didn’t say anything, Gao Changxiu looked at his phone and said, “It’s almost time, why hasn’t Teacher Chi arrived yet?” 

Han Feixu was tired from sitting down for so long and was adjusting her posture when she heard these words. Her movements paused, “Teacher Chi?” 

As of now, there are only two famous actors surnamed Chi in the entertainment industry. One of them is a 50-year-old male actor. 

Gao Changxiu was responding to a WeChat message so he didn’t look up when he answered, “Yes.” 

Then, as if he felt something was wrong, so he raised his head and asked, “Han-jie, do you not know who the other guest is? 

Han Feixu’s next expression clearly told him that she did not. 

Gao Changxiu fell silent.

To begin with, Gao Changxiu has been a big fan who admired both Han Feixu and Chi Qiu very much. Although his two admired stars have no hatred between the two of them, due to Shi Xi’s recent scandal being such a big incident and Han Feixu’s accidental appearance, everything may have changed. He was afraid of accidentally attracting hate onto himself, but after receiving notice that the other two guests were these two, he changed his mind. This time, the dirty water will most definitely not be poured onto him.

Han Feixu’s expression was not pretty. She didn’t care if the program’s team thought of her beneath their notice or wanted her to serve as a background prop in order to bring out the main guest’s brilliance, but this style of paying lip service and purposefully creating trouble just to increase the click through rate (CTR)….this was a style she couldn’t stand. 

Han Fiexu stood up and Zhong Yuanyuan beside her also stood up with anxiety. Zhogn Yuanyuan understood that if Han Feixu is photographed in the same frame as Chi Qiu and it was posted on the Internet, who knows how many bad rumors will spread out. As Han Feixu walked out, Zhong Yuanyuan followed her closely, “How can something like this happen? Why don’t I give Liang-jie a call? We can ask them to temporarily change the guests, but you two must not appear on the same stage right now. I don’t know what that Chi Qiu is thinking to have actually agreed to this….”

There was a loud noise outside the door as they walked out, and they heard an angry woman’s voice say, 

“Didn’t you say it was going to be Yin Jiahe? Why did it suddenly switch to Han Feixu?!”

The director smiled apologetically, “I’m really sorry, it seems our staff has made a mistake. Miss Yin is the guest for the next episode and since all the files were put together, perhaps one of our lower-leveled staff members got confused and messed up the names.” 

The angry voice belonged to Chi Qiu’s agent. She was someone who has seen many despicable schemes before and knew this was just an excuse from the program to cover up their tracks. The other party obviously put the two stars together on purpose!

“Is there any other show who does things like you guys! You’ve made such a big mistake, how are you going to continue shooting now?!” 

The agent started expressing the intention of not wanting to shoot the show anymore so the director quickly stopped her words, “Of course we can still shoot. You see, the theme for today’s show is “Debut.”  All three guests we have here today became nationally famous due to their debut work. Today we will only be discussing each of their debut films and not about anything else.” 

Although it’s true that they don’t have to discuss anything else, as long as they can have the words “Chi Qiu” and “Han Feixu” in the same title and frame, it will attract the attention of a large number of viewers!

The agent was angered beyond belief, but she could’t rebut his words. According to the director’s words, Chi Qiu must stay and record this show or else if she cancels this broadcast, the director will post a statement saying that the reason for the episode’s cancellation was because Chi Qiu decided to break the contract at the last minute.

Although this show is only an online variety show, it is backed by a well-known company and jointly produced with a local TV station. With such a large backing, they were not afraid of offending popular artists. 

Zhong Yuanyuan has already started calling Liang Zhu. As of right now, she was very much in support of Han Feixu leaving the show, even if it meant breaking the contract. However, she is just an assistant and couldn’t negotiate with the program crew about such a major event such as breaking the contract. 

Zhong Yuanyuan had just scrolled to Liang Zhu’s mobile number, dialed it, when she looked up only to find Han Feixu had already walked over.

F*ck! What is she going to do!

That’s right! Liang-jie did say that 10 years ago Han Feixu’s personality was more hot headed! Could it be that….Han Feixu was going to confront these people right here in the open?!!

Today Han Feixu was wearing a sleeveless purple evening dress made by Valentino. Every year, Han Feixu regularly custom ordered clothes from several famous clothing brands and Valentino was one of them. When Han Feixu had laid her eyes on this newly made, luxury outfit that was made to fit her size perfectly, she finally experienced what it was like to be rich. 

Han Feixu’s dress was simple and elegant, the polar opposite of Chi Qiu. 

Chi Qiu was wearing a butterfly print muslin dress, a burgundy beret on her head and a leather butterfly belt that wrapped perfectly around her slender and supple waist. She wore a bracelet inlaid with diamonds and her slightly ostentatious ruby necklaces and earrings shined dazzlingly under the bright light. She was casually holding a pair of sunglasses in her hand as she looked directly at the approaching Han Feixu. 

Han Feixu stopped in front of Chi Qiu, just in time to hear Chi Qiu’s agent say: “Our Chi Qiu came here with a sincere heart, yet your program does not reciprocate that sincerity. In that case, why should we continue to film with you? We will send you the money in compensation for the termination fees but as for who is right and who is wrong, we will hash that out another time.” 

Does that mean Chi Qiu wishes to fight a war of attrition with the show? 

The director was starting to panic. He has pushed other actors like this before, but no one has been as tough as Chi Qiu’s agent. He was also getting a little flustered when Chi Qiu suddenly said, “No need, we’ll just record with what we have.” 

Han Feixu raised her eyebrows. Perfect, she was just about to say the same thing. 

She quietly observed Chi Qiu, but she could not see any emotion on the other’s face. She turned her head and looked at the director, “Yes, let’s just record like this. Although I was looking forward to shooting this episode with Teacher Yin Jiahe, I am also willing to record with Teacher Chi. Teacher Chi and I have never met before, but since we are now working together we can get to know one another. Isn’t that right, Teacher Chi?” 

Her words showed that she was also ignorant of the whole Yin Jiahe being switched with Chi Qiu matter.

The director understood that Chi Qiu was scolding him indirectly and turned his head to the side with a guilty conscience. No matter, if he is to be scolded then he’ll let himself be scolded. As long as the show goes on, he will not say anything. 

Chi Qiu had already put her makeup on before she came, but she still needed to touch up her makeup. They returned toeh dressing room together with Chi Qiu’s agent following behind. The agent looked very upset and her eyes towards Han Feixu were not very friendly. 

While she was applying her makeup Chi Qiu suddenly looked at Han Feixu in the mirror and suddenly waved at her, “Han Feixu, come over for a second.” 

Han Feixu walked over and wanted to ask what she wanted to do when Chi Qiu suddenly stood up, hugged Han Feixu with one arm and then made a funny expression before pressing the button that takes the selfie on her phone. 

Her actions were completed in one smooth go and it was over in less than two seconds. After she finished, Chi Qiu returned to her originally indifferent appearance and then sat down as she began to edit the photos.  

Except for Chi Qiu’s assistant and agent, everyone else was at a loss. Chi Qiu’s image was somewhat like Ye Mingxin, clean and aloof, but she was a little bit more lively than Ye Mingxin and belonged more to the gap moe* category. (T/N: Gap moe= when someone does something completely contradictory to what their usual habits/personality/appearance dictates. Usually that contradictory feeling is rather cute. Technically  “反差萌那” is more directly translated to “cuteness discrepancy” but I feel like it’s more relatable if I use gap moe.)

With her head bowed, she was editing her skin with the app when she suddenly thought of something and raised her head to ask Han Feixu, “Do you need to make your face a little bit more pointed?” 

Han Feixu: “….No need.” 

“Oh.” Then there was nothing she needed to edit for Han Feixu. Chi Qiu then opened her Weibo, typed out two sentences and then sent out a post without double checking. 

This was the second Weibo posted by Chi Qiu since Shi Xi’s scandal. The first post was her announcing her divorce with Shi Xi. 

In just two weeks, this was Han Feixu’s fourth appearance in the hot searches.

Ye Mingxin said goodbye to Director Dugu as they exited the teahouse. Then after she got in the car, she fell asleep for a little while before opening her eyes again. She pulled out her phone and was ready to catch up on the news. 

She clicked open the hot searches on Weibo and was taken aback when she saw Han Feixu’s name. 

Then Ye Mingxin read the entire hot search tag again before her face turned black.

Did anyone also notice that this chapter was x2 longer than the previous chapters’ length? Starting from roughly Ch.19 (Ch.18 is a short transition chapter) and onwards the chapters will be twice as long in length. ヽ(‘ ∇‘ )ノ
