My Dear Miss Medical Examiner Ch.1

Before we begin, the author would like to say something:

Hello, everyone, I am this novel’s author.

This time, the story will be lighter than my previous work,  “Life’s Inn”. It will be more relaxing. The scientific terms in the forensic and criminal investigation parts will be carefully checked and verified. However, I am not a professional, so please forgive me if there are any mistakes or omissions. If you really don’t like this novel, please just click the button in the upper righthand corner to exit this page. Thank you.

The bibliography is attached below, I once again thank my friends for providing me with this information.

*Omitted: The author then goes on to list a long list of references she used.

Chapter 1: An Old Dream

“Chu Nan…..” The girl stood in the rain with an umbrella, about three to five steps away from her, but the rain blurred the other girl’s features.

Lin Yan’s heart tightened, fearing that this was just another dream of her own making. She stretched out her trembling hand, cautious and uncertain.

“Lin Yan, why are you standing there frozen for? Hurry up and follow me. We’re eating dinner at my house.” The surrounding crowd began to surge forward, pushing her forward with them.

The girl grabbed her wrist and pulled her under the umbrella. The other hand helped adjust the strap of the school bag that had fallen down Lin Yan’s arm. There was a little annoyance in the girl’s tone as she spoke.

“How many times have I told you? Always remember to take an umbrella with you on rainy days. Why can’t you ever fix this habit of yours? Do you like getting soaked in the rain? You should know that it’s almost midterms season. What are you going to do if you catch a cold?”

The girl continued to ramble, jabbering on endlessly.

She should feel annoyed and fed up, but instead Lin Yan felt her eyes heat up and grabbed the wrist of that white and slender hand.

Her hand tightened around that fair wrist. The other girl is slightly taller than her, so she had to look up when she spoke with an expectant expression on her face, “Chu Nan….you…you’ve returned?”

The girl in her white school uniform looked down, her appearance the same as before, with a faint smile on her lips.

Eyes that should have been sparkling like the stars were suddenly replaced with two dark holes filled with blood dripping out of them.

The red contrasted deeply with that overly pale face and the weird smile that stretched unnaturally across the cheeks. The skin under her fingertips turned cold and smooth to the touch, like the corpses she had dissected countless times before.

A chill rose from the soles of her feet and up her entire body.

Lin Yan screamed, “Chu Nan!”

She sat up in her bed, panting for breath. She lowered her eyes slightly and then put a hand against her forehead as she sighed in her heart.

Another nightmare.

The ticking clock on the bedside table glows faintly in the dark, the hour hand indicating that it had just passed four in the morning.

Lin Yan stretched out a hand, fumbling around for the glass on the table’s surface and then opening the drawer beneath. Due to her excessive use of force, something spilled onto the floor.

She picked up a white medicine bottle, poured out two pills into her palm, and then swallowed it all with the warm water that had long since cooled down in this air-conditioned room.

She drank hurriedly and quickly, as if she was trying to calm some sort of uneasy restlessness.

The water dripped down her slender neck, wetting the tight camisole she wore.

She raised a hand to wipe the corners of her lips, but someone had already placed a handkerchief into her palm.

“Use this.”

That voice is so familiar.

The goosebumps on her arms rose.

She was half nervous, half cautious as she looked behind her, as if she was afraid of alarming the person behind her, “Chu Nan…..”

Then the moment when their eyes met, Lin Yan felt her heart jump into her throat, but she smiled gently at the other party. Seeing that Lin Yan had not moved, the other party reached out with the handkerchief, carefully wiping the water on Lin Yan’s lips,

“Did you have another nightmare?”

“No…..” She automatically wanted to refute but instead stretched out a hand, as if she wanted to prove something.

Understanding flashed in the girl’s eyes and she reached out her own hand. Lin Yan hooked her pinky around the other girl’s pinky. The touch was soft and warm, like the warmth of a living person.

Lin Yan grasped the other’s hand tightly, as if grasping her only lifeline.

Lin Yan’s eyes had always been beautiful. A pair of slanted phoenix eyes that when paired with the straight bridge of her nose was simply breathtaking. At a glance, her eyes seemed to carry a flirtatious meaning, and even more so with the weeping expression currently on her face.

The girl patted the back of her hand in comfort, “Everything is okay. I’m back now.”

The same gentle and indulging tone she had always used.

The sour feeling in her nose made her unable to bear it anymore. Lin Yan squeezed the girl into her arms: “Great, Chu Nan, it’s great that you’re back….Chu Nan, I’ve missed you so much…all these years…where have you….been?”

“I….” The girl began and then frowned, her face suddenly overflowing with pain. Although she was obviously indoors, the girl’s clothes slowly grew damp and wet.

“I….I don’t know….It hurts…so much….Lin Yan…save me…..save me….”

Something cold touched her neck and the girl’s sobbing gripped Lin Yan’s heart with anxiety. Lin Yan clenched her fists, a deranged expression appearing on her face.

Those usually indifferent eyes suddenly turned red.

“Who was it?! Who was it?! Chu Nan, tell me?! Who was it! Who killed you?!”

“It…was…”

Lin Yan shook the girl’s shoulders, and suddenly it was like the girl couldn’t speak. Her voice was now dull and hoarse, mixed with weird noises. Like a radio station that stopped abruptly at midnight.

Lin Yan felt her insides twist in pain and she gritted her teeth, until she tasted blood on the tip of her tongue. She forced back the tears that threatened to overflow and drip down her face.

She stroked the girl’s cheek gently, the touch under her fingertips now cold and she thought that perhaps the cold was from the tears the girl was crying. The pain and pity in her heart increased, “Chu Nan, don’t be afraid, you can tell me. No matter who it is, I will never let them get away with this.”

As soon as she finished speaking, the girl in front of her suddenly giggled and the voice was now sharp and harsh, like someone scratching their nails against the blackboard.

A chill suddenly rushed up her back.

And Lin Yan suddenly felt like she couldn’t breathe.

The night outside the window was an inky black, like the black ink of a brush and the shadows of the trees swayed, their silhouettes like ghosts dancing in the air.

A violent wind rushed into the room and blew her curtains to the side , extinguishing the faint night lights without a sound.

She watched as spots began to appear on those usually flawless hands. The skin was now cold and smooth like slippery oil and rotten blue veins emerged on those tender hands.

Lin Yan’s eyes widened. She couldn’t breathe and she stretched out her hands in vain as she tried to reach out towards the other: “Chu…Chu Nan.”

“It was you…you…you…..” The skin on the girl’s face peeled off slowly, inch by inch as a hoarse and sharp voice rang out. The white bones beneath were exposed and the eyes fell out their sockets, leaving only two empty holes behind. Those holes locked onto Lin Yan firmly.

A disgusting and rancid smell wafted into the room.

“No!!!” Lin Yan screamed, slapping the hand gripping tightly against hers but her hand passed uselessly through the air. All that was left on the sheets was a pile of crushed and minced meat.

The thick and smelly blood ran down her sheets, dying the luxurious wool carpet below a deep crimson color.

Ding-a-ling—–!

The alarm rang out loudly and Lin Yan abruptly sat up.

The bright light outside streamed through the windows to land on her face.

The gentle morning breeze blew through the screen of the window as the hands on the clock sitting on the bedside table continued to tick quietly. The aroma of toasted bread slowly winded up towards her from somewhere downstairs.

She turned off the alarm clock and looked around her. All was calm. Another ordinary weekday morning.

She lifted her blankets and slipped into the slippers waiting below her bed. When she stepped onto the carpet, her feet sunk into the soft wool and her gaze lowered slightly. There were dark marks on the carpet, the color as red as blood.

The woman’s throat moved as she swallowed down her uneasy feelings.

Lin Yan closed her eyes and calmed her breathing.

A little while later, the butler arrived and knocked on the door, “Miss, breakfast is ready.”

After washing up, Lin Yan went downstairs, wrapped in her silk robe. The panic that had appeared on her face last night had long disappeared without a trace, now replaced with a somewhat lazy and aloof expression. An aura of carefree tiredness exuded from her bones.

“Where is the driver?”

“He is waiting outside.”

Although the Lin Mansion is large, the butler understood that his mistress had a short temper and did not like to live with her servants. So whether it be him, the head butler, or the other servants, they had to rush over here early every morning to serve her. They only returned to their living quarters late at night when she had fallen asleep.

However, not a trace of resentment was on his face as he replied respectfully.

Lin Yan seemed satisfied.

Her assistant was also waiting downstairs and after seeing that she had come down, quickly got up from the sofa and bowed slightly, “Medical Examiner Lin.”

Lin Yan gave him a glance and then looked at the large pile of documents prepared for today’s court session sitting next to the diligent young man.

She felt annoyed from the bottom of her heart and so didn’t nod or agree, let alone invite him to eat breakfast with her. Although he is an assistant and should be treated like a colleague, he has always been treated as nothing more than a mere servant.

And without Lin Yan’s nod of acknowledgement, the other people in the house also treated him like air.

The young man was embarrassed and at a loss when he saw a shadow move through the corner of his eye. The shadow moved through the hallway and sat down in the dining room.

The chair didn’t even make a sound.

The chefs of the Lin family are all very skilled. They can cook both Chinese and Western dishes. Although they did not make many dishes, they were all precious and ingenious dishes.

But after taking no more than two bites, the master of the mansion put down her spoon, having seemingly lost her appetite. She raised a napkin and pressed it against her lips.

No one dared to try and persuade her to eat more than two bites. The butler simply took away the dishware and cutlery as Lin Yan walked into the cloakroom.

She has a long stature, and would definitely not be considered short among women, but because of how thin she is, she looked a little weak. Her walking posture had a light gait to it, like a Persian cat as she paced along the luxurious carpet of the cloakroom.

She suddenly stopped, as if she had thought of something, “That’s right–”

The old butler outside dared not to keep her waiting, “Miss, please give us your orders.”

“Throw away the carpet in my room.”

The carpet in her room had just been shipped from an auction that was held in London last week.  It is said that it once was a gift given by Persian Safavid Dynasty’s diplomats to the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire. It’s market value was well over one million.

And it is now to be thrown away, without even batting an eye.

The butler seemed to have long become accustomed to the women’s wilfulness and her habit of spending money like dirt. He simply bowed and then replied: “Understood, Miss. Do you need a new one in replacement?”

“No need.”

The cold voice rang out from behind the door to the cloakroom. Although it is called the cloakroom, the room was actually about the same size as the bedroom upstairs and is full of clothes, shoes, and accessories that Lin Yan had collected from all over the world.

Today it seemed the owner of the cloakroom lacked interest and simply picked an outfit hanging to the side. She buttoned her buttons one by one, but left the top two unbuttoned. She shifted the collar, revealing a bit of collarbone that radiated an air of seductiveness.

She unscrewed the lid of her lipstick, lightly applying some on her upper and lower lips before rubbing some of the excess makeup with a slender finger. She slightly lifted her jaw towards the mirror.

The woman’s complexion was pale and white, like she hasn’t seen sunlight in a long time. Yet, paired with her blazing red lips, and slightly raised brows, her face was comparable to that of a model walking down the runway. Her face showed a bit of arrogance, yet because of her phoenix eyes, she came across as enchanting and seductive instead.

Her looks may be splendid and beautiful, but they were accompanied by a permeating cold.

With a thin smile on her lips, she picked up a suit jacket and walked out.

The driver quickly opened the door for her and when Lin Yan sat down, the assistant followed behind with the pile of documents in his arms: “Medical Examiner Lin, here are all the materials, including the death certificate, prepared for your court appearance today.”

The male’s body odor wafted into her nose. It was a slight foot smell mixed with sweat. Medical Examiners’ noses are always particularly sensitive, hers especially.

Lin Yan leaned against the leather seat, her previously closed eyes suddenly snapping open, “Get in the back.”

The Mercedes-Benz business car is very spacious, and there was plenty of room. The assistant was taken aback for a moment and then looked at her immaculate appearance before looking down at his smudged trousers. His fragile self-esteem fell apart.

The young man slowly stepped out of the car and then climbed into the back of the Mercedes-Benz as he didn’t dare say another word.

“Butler.”

“Miss.”  The butler had closed the door behind her and now sat in the front passenger seat. He immediately turned towards her when she called out to him.

“Change to a different car when you come to pick me up in the afternoon. Let Liu Ma use this car to buy groceries for dinner tonight.”

“Understood, Miss.”

“As for you,” She tapped her fingertips on the precious quartz watch on her wrist, and slowly spat out a string of harsh words, “Why did you come so early? Are you in a rush to die and reincarnate? If you want to die, it’s better to do so in the morgue. With your current state of dress, aren’t you afraid that the lawyer will accuse you of murder instead?”

The young man’s self-esteem was pierced by her every word and he sank down into his seat in the back. He gripped the documents in his hands tightly and didn’t dare to say a word.

The car started and fortunately someone broke the awkward silence, “Miss, do you want to listen to the news?”

Lin Yan hummed in affirmative.

The driver turned the knob on the radio in the car and the sweet voice of a female anchor rang out, “The prosecution sued the defendant, Mr. Jin, for murdering Miss Wang, an employee who worked in his KTV, on April 18, 2007. The corpse was found in the wilderness and the evidence was conclusive. He was charged with multiple crimes including deliberate homicide, mutilation of the corpse, and so on. The first court sentenced him to death with reprieve, but Mr. Jin refused to accept the ruling of the court and filed for an appeal. The second trial will be held at the Binhai Higher People’s Court at 10 o’clock this morning. When the trial starts, Lin Yan, a young medical examiner from Fada Institute of Forensic Medicine & Science, will testify for the defense. New evidence will be brought into the court today….”

The female anchor spoke with fervor and with evident passion. After she finished reading the summary of the case as fast as she could she began to list Lin Yan’s lifetime achievements which soon diverged into media gossip.

Lin Yan dozed through most of it and only heard a few words, “When it comes to forensic science, Medical Examiner Lin can be described as a leader of the younger generation. She graduated from Fudan University’s School of Medicine, and earned her master’s and doctoral degree from the Department of Forensic Medicine at Boston University. It is said that she has dissected over 5,000 corpses in the last ten years and has a rich experience with…..”

Then after the achievements, the anchor turned to media gossip: “Medical Examiner Lin, as the only daughter of the Lin family, has a net worth of more than 10 million yuan. Recently, she’s been trending on the internet due to her intimate relationship with Zhang Dong of the Zhongcheng Group. There are photos circulating online that apparently show the two of them kissing in the streets. Could this be the beginning of something more?”

Zhang Dong?

Which Zhang Dong?

Lin Yan frowned. She had kissed too many people before, how was she supposed to remember each one? All kinds of faces flashed in her mind, but she couldn’t find the face that matched the name spoken on the radio.

“Miss, do you need us too…” The butler turned around and looked at her.

“Hmm.” Miss Lin nodded, “Which station is this?”

“The Daily News.” The butler replied and then secretly wrote down the name in a notebook.

The high-rise buildings flashed by in the car window and they soon quickly turned into an area where a square with perfectly lined trees on either side greeted them. The Courthouse was just behind the square not too far ahead.

Many people have gathered in the square. Today, the public hearing will be attended by many major media groups and other important people. As soon as Lin Yan’s car arrived, lights began to flash on the sides of the road.

Lin Yan still looked lethargic, like she had just woken up, as she spoke, “Go tell them that my recent lover is not that man from the Zhongcheng Group… Zhang-…which Zhang was it again?”

“Zhang Dong.” The butler readily replied.

“Oh, yes, him. These media groups are rather unprofessional. What Daily News? I think they should change their name to Yesterday’s News instead.” She chuckled softly, her tone full of sarcasm.

The driver stopped the car: “Miss, we’re here.”

The butler took a look outside. Many people were squatting at the doors of the courthouse, carrying banners and signs on their shoulders as they shouted and screamed. When they saw their car coming, they grew agitated and slowly stood up in groups of twos and threes.

The butler hesitated: “Miss, why don’t we send you through the back door instead?”

Lin Yan sneered and pushed open the car door: “I am not the murderer, so why should I hide?”

T/N: (please read)

Warning: So I’m just going to put this out there….there will be lots of blood, lots of angst, lots of tears, and more. This novel will cover mature themes such as trauma, drugs, sex, etc. So if you don’t like that stuff, I’m warning you to move on now. Go read one of the more relaxing novels on my website instead if you’re uncomfortable with this stuff. If you are staying despite my warnings, well, buckle in, and prepare to enjoy one hell of a ride.

*In case you were wondering, China has a different procedure to becoming a medical professional than in America. Here in America, you take 4 years undergraduate, go to medical school for another 4 and then do your residency and stuff. In China, you go to medical school directly as an undergrad for 5 years and then go do residency + get a Master’s degree for clinical specialization.

**Please note that “medical examiner” is the translation I chose for the words “法医” but it could also be translated to “forensic investigator”, “forensic pathologist”, etc. There is a slight difference to those professions in English (usually a license or some legal definition), but it seems that in Chinese “法医” is a broad term to encompass all those professions. I chose the words “medical examiner” in the end because many english translations of chinese TV dramas and books have done the same. If you believed I have made a mistake in translation, feel free to comment below, I am open to all criticism.

***For those who have read another work I have translated, When the Hacker is Forced to Marry, you may have noticed that the main characters have the same name. However, this is not actually so. Lin Yan in Hacker is spelled as 林 and Lin Yan in this work is spelled as 林. Although they both have the same tone marks and virtually same pronunciation, the second character in their names are very different. The Yan in Hacker means ‘ink-stone’ while the Yan in this novel means ‘to hate, to loathe’ (and this is a very important distinction.).

****Fun fact: My editor tried to mtl the novel and was quite confused because sometimes google translate would turn Lin Yan into Lin Wei, Lin Nian, or even Lin Fan. So if you have mtl the novel before, it’s better to throw all your expectations out of the window cause the mtl sucks.

For those interested in the author’s other work (Life’s Inn), click this link: http://www.jjwxc.net/onebook.php?novelid=3954726

Translated (rough) summary:

Life is like an inn, and I am just a passerby.

There must be gaps in life so that light can flow through.

A young, gentle, warm and rash firefighter X Older, black-bellied, and single ER doctor

*Author: I would like to dedicate this to all firefighters and doctors fighting on the front lines.

Side couples:

  1. Fussy rookie doctor x Streamer childhood sweetheart/girlfriend
  2. Affectionate obstetrician/gynecologist x Mature and steady criminal investigation team leader

My thoughts on “Life’s Inn”: I only read a few chapters since I am still catching up on a lot of other novels, but it’s really angsty so…you’ve been warned.

  3. Ah, i remember reading this one before! The MC is super jaded and prickly in the beginning, then she becomes a big old softie later on! Her character growth is to die for! Also, the slow unraveling of their backstories is so good, and way the author handles trauma/mental illness in this novel is so amazing. She doesn’t treat mental illnesses/disorders with ignorance like other CN authors and actually writes a beautiful story of recovery and hurt/comfort. Looking forward to this so much~~
