My Dear Miss Medical Examiner Ch.2

Chapter 2: Court Appearance

**Warning: Some mentions of violence, gore, sexual assault/harassment, etc.***

“Excuse me, Miss Lin, what are your feelings on testifying for the suspect in court today?”

“Miss Lin, how sure are you that your autopsy report will convince the judge and affect the final verdict?”

“I’ve heard that the suspect’s father is the head of Xinye Company and has had business dealings with the Lin Group in the past. Is this information true?”

“Miss Lin, recently there have been rumors of you and Zhang Dong from Zhongcheng Group being rather close….”

As soon as she got out of the car, she was surrounded by members of the media, and flashes of light greeted her presence. All sorts of cameras and microphones appeared in front of her.

The butler guided her into the building as her bodyguards cleared the way. The person in the middle of the storm wore an indifferent face. She faced all types of strange and crafty questions without the slightest change in her face, not even her eyebrows moved.

Until–

Lin Yan took off her sunglasses, a playful smile hanging from the corners of her lips as she looked up at the banner in the middle of a wreath that was arranged above the steps of the highest court of law in the province.

“Corrupt medical examiners who testify for murderers deserve to die!”

“Deranged, ruthless, and heartless! Medical examiners like you should be kicked out of the judicial circles entirely!”

“Miss–” The butler moved forward to stop the protestors.

Lin Yan placed her sunglasses back over her eyes again and she even let out a delighted whistle: “Next time, they should use a better-looking photo.”

The black and white photo imprinted on the banner hanging in the middle of the wreath was a woman with high eyebrows and prominent cheekbones. The eyes were full of aloofness and the smile hanging from the corners of her lips seemed to be mocking at the ludicrous world around her. The picture went against the usually preferred gentle and soft beauty aesthetics.

Everything was ready as the lawyer greeted her and gave her a briefing as she walked: “This time the other party has come prepared. Is the evidence in your hands enough to absolve him of all charges?”

Lin Yan shrugged, conveying that there was nothing she could do: “The judge has the final say. I’m only responsible for providing the evidence in his favor, but the outcome has nothing to do with me.”

The trial began and the two-hour tug of war between the lawyers made Lin Yan feel sleepy. However, when the judge finally called her name, her usually careless and indifferent gaze flashed with a hint of sharpness.

She slowly stood up and walked to the witness stand.

The prosecutor sucked in a cold breath and then glanced at his own witness, also an experienced medical examiner.

The other side also regarded the prosecutor’s witness as a dangerous enemy. The two sides glanced at each other, both sides faced the other with the willingness to break the cauldrons and sink the boats*. (*T/N: idiom that means to burn one’ s own way of retreat and be determined to fight to the end)

“From the DNA testing done on the evidence, the investigators were able to find suspect Jin Weixin’s DNA on the inside of the victim’s undergarments. Do you have anything to say about this finding?”

The prosecutor took the lead in asking questions.

Lin Yan’s forehead didn’t even wrinkle as she answered, “I have nothing to say.”

The suspect, who was sitting below in a pair of handcuffs, seemed to be agitated by this statement and had to be held down by the bailiff.

Miss Lin, who treated her every word as precious as gold, glanced at him and then finally added on another sentence, “But this only reveals that he has had sex with the deceased person, it does not prove that he is the murderer.”

The lawyer’s lips bent down slightly: “According to the police investigation results, the victim entered the KTV at about 10 pm on April 18, 2007. The victim then went into a private room with the suspect and his friends. This is a video from the surveillance camera installed in the corridor where the event occurred.”

The lawyer’s assistant turned on the computer and pressed the play button. Lin Yan watched as, on the screen, Jin Weixin hugged the now deceased Wang Li. His eyes were full of tender affection as he staggered forward, seemingly drunk.

At the same time, they walked right under the camera and the camera picked up Wang Li’s impatient face, it looked like she was forced into this.

The timestamp on the bottom of the video shows that it was 10:15. Two hours later, Jin Weixin ran out of the private room, alone, and in a panic. About ten minutes later, he dragged a suitcase into the room.

That suitcase was the tool he used to hide and then throw the body out. His behavior was highly suspicious, but since he was the boss, the employees naturally didn’t dare to say anything. Not to mention, it was early in the morning when people were too tired to care. Jin Weixin then fled to the parking lot where another surveillance camera captured him driving off. The facts of the crime were pretty clear. He had a motive, there was evidence and the autopsy results were conclusive. He could be convicted without even making a single confession.

Jin Weixin, who was sitting below with his hands cuffed, flashed through a few different expressions as his hands clasped tightly together. A clear and obvious sign of tension.

“According to the testimony of an eyewitness who was also drinking in the private room, the suspect started touching the victim shortly after sitting down. The victim was forced to accept his advances due to him being her boss until she couldn’t take it anymore when the suspect–” As he talked, he cast his cold eyes towards Jin Weixin.

“-when the suspect told the victim to pick up the poker cards that had fallen into his pants with her mouth.”

Pick it up, why aren’t you picking them up? Hurry up and pick them up for this daddy and all this money will be yours.” Jin Weixin slapped the face of the girl kneeling in front of him with a wad of cash.

The woman wore a thin cropped top and shorts. The man saw that she remained motionless and directly stuffed the money into the girl’s drooping collarline.

“Pick them up! Pick them up for this daddy! If you can’t do it, then I’ll help you!” As he said this, he forcibly pressed her head down, as tears leaked from the girl’s eyes.

The lawyer described the above scene in detail to the audience.

A collective boo could be heard from the gallery.

The judge hammered his mallet, “Silence!”

Lin Yan shook her head and sneered as she interrupted the other party’s bombastic storytelling, “I am not interested in what happened between the two parties and there is no need for you to repeat to me what has already occurred. I am only here to share the results of my examination–”

The prosecutor’s forensic expert stood up and spoke: “The deceased died due to hemorrhagic shock from excessive blood loss caused by a sharp, single-edged weapon. The murder weapon in question is this fruit knife.”

The lawyer raised the bag that contained the murder weapon as the expert continued to speak, “The murder weapon is 10cm long and 3cm wide at its widest point, which is consistent with the sharp wounds found on the deceased. The DNA testing later found that the blood from this knife belongs to the deceased and the fingerprints on it match the suspect’s prints. What do you have to say about this?”

Those words were directed towards Lin Yan.

This rich young lady had been standing for so long and she leaned against the stand indifferently, “Lawyer, please show exhibit No.B4.”

After receiving permission from the judge, the defendant’s lawyer turned on the projector and a picture was soon projected onto the big screen.

“This is the bruise found on the lower back of the deceased–”

“Objection! This evidence has nothing to do with the case!” The prosecutor immediately raised his hand to show his disapproval.

The judge gave him a glance before returning his gaze to the screen.

“Overruled.”

The corners of Lin Yan’s lips raised slightly, “The second autopsy revealed that the deceased only had one bruise on her body. This bruise is about 3 cm in size. As we all know, bruises form when blood vessels near the skin’s surface rupture. Therefore, a bruising can only occur when the blood is still flowing in the body.”

“When a person dies, the heart stops beating, and the blood no longer circulates. The blood will then clot and congeal in just a few minutes. Thus, it is impossible for new bruises to materialize after one dies.”

“This doesn’t prove anything. It is just a bruise and is not a fatal wound. The victim may have bumped into the corner of the table during her struggle.”

The other side’s forensic expert spoke up.

Lin Yan snapped her fingers: “What you said is correct. Please pull up exhibit No.B2.”

A picture of the inside of the KTV private room appeared on the screen. It was the image taken by the police who had documented the scene of the crime.

On the screen, one can see the sorry state the room was in as beer bottles littered the ground. A pool of blood was on the ground and there were even some droplets of blood on the bottoms of the sofa.

“Zoom in on the table. Please take a look at the corner of the table.”

Everyone was puzzled.

Lin Yan raised her eyebrows and flashed a smile as she glanced at the “experienced” forensic expert.

Although she was smiling, there was a hint of ridicule in her eyes.

A trace of sweat slid down the opponent’s forehead.

“A layman may not understand it, but any forensic expert can tell from a glance at how the bruise was formed. There are only round tables in this room, so no matter how hard the two struggled, the bruise couldn’t have been formed from bumping into the table.”

The bruise was about the size of a fingernail, yet it was unnaturally deep and seemed to penetrate all the way inside.

Such a deep bruise cannot be caused by a round table.

“That only tells us that the bruising occurred while the deceased was still alive. It still doesn’t change the irrefutable fact that the suspect’s fingerprints were found on the murder weapon.”

Lin Yan let out a retort, “Who said that the death was due to hemorrhagic shock caused by a sharp object?”

If the cause of death was deemed inaccurate, then the fingerprints of Jin Weixin on the murder weapon would become useless.

There was another uproar in the gallery.

The judge clamored for silence once again.

“Then, according to you, what is the cause of death?”

“Foxglove poisoning.”

The forensic expert looked relieved after hearing what Lin Yan said: “It is true that during the follow-up investigation by the police, it was found that the deceased had a history of heart disease and often ingested medicine that contained foxglove. However, we did some blood drug testing and found that the amount of foxglove in her body was not lethal enough to have killed her as the dosage was within the normal limits.”

Lin Yan sneered: “Really?”

Lin Yan’s assistant switched to the next slide with a knowing look.

“During the second autopsy, we examined the liver tissue and gall of the deceased. From this, we were able to deduce that the peak plasma concentration of the drug occurred exactly one hour before death, and the dosage was–”

She paused and then unhurriedly spat out these words, “Fatal.”

The prosecutor’s own forehead began trickling big beads of sweat while the forensic expert dumbfoundedly licked his dry lips.

The entire courtroom was silent and only the suspect moved as he dropped his head into his handcuffed hands.

It was already late afternoon and the evening light had slipped away from the witness stand to the floor below. The area where Lin Yan was standing was no longer illuminated by the sun as she was thrown into the darkness.

The corners of her lips curled up, revealing a smile that could turn the world upside down.

If she hadn’t smiled, it would have been fine, but when she did, one could see an indescribable trace of derision in it.

“Even if the blood had almost metabolized most of the toxins, there were clues that could still be found in the liver and gall of the deceased. However, a true forensic investigation will never rely on only one technical method. We also extracted the liquid from the deceased’s eyes and the test results were as expected. The results showed that the cause of death was due to poisoning from the fatal amount of foxglove. In a moment, the results will be submitted to the court for verification.”

The prosecutor snapped his head towards his own forensic expert. The other party’s forehead was full of cold sweat and his mouth opened and closed multiple times, but he didn’t dare to speak again.

Examining the vitreous fluid of the eyeball is an unconventional autopsy method. Anyone can see that the deceased chest was pierced by a fruit knife and with the blood flowing everywhere, anyone’s first reaction would be to conclude that the victim died due to blood loss.

However, Lin Yan did not take the normal path.

Miss Lin, who had spoken for a long time, licked her dry lips and finally returned to her seat.

Her first thought after the uproar she caused was–fu*k, I didn’t apply enough chapstick this morning.

The police who handle these cases pay particular attention to the evidence and the court even more so as they require a complete chain of evidence before making a ruling. Thus, it was imperative that this case was to be sent back for another round of investigations and have the new evidence be verified before passing any judgment.

Jin Weixin, who was still wearing his handcuffs as he was escorted down the steps by the bailiff, passed by her. His throat moved up and down and his voice was slightly hoarse as he lightly uttered two words: “Thank you.”

Lin Yan raised her eyebrows but there was still no reaction on her face. She moved to leave, but before she could even take more than two steps she was surrounded by the reporters who were waiting outside.

“Miss Lin, Miss Lin, did you testify for the suspect because of his connections with your father?”

“Miss Lin, even though the suspect Jin Weixin was not found guilty of murder, he had still committed the crime of assaulting and possibly raping a woman. As a woman yourself, what do you have to say about all this?”

“Miss Lin, you have testified for many criminal suspects these past few years and many of them have either been successfully released or had their sentences reduced due to your testimonies. For example, last’s month’s sentencing of the ‘Southside’s dismemberment killer’ had been changed from the death penalty to indefinite life in prison. I’ve heard that because of this you have been listed as public enemy number one by Binhai province’s Public Security Bureau. Is this true?” (T/N: Public Security Bureau or PSB is literally just the official title for the local or provincial police department in China.)

Each question was more pointed than the last one and yet the person being questioned didn’t say a word and fixed her gaze forward as she was escorted out by her assistant.

“Excuse me, excuse me! Miss Lin, as a holder of a vast fortune, why did you choose to become a medical examiner?”

The little reporter who had squeezed his way to the front with much difficulty looked like he had just graduated from university. He nervously held out his microphone with a face full of sweat.

The question seemingly had nothing to do with the case, yet Lin Yuan paused and the face that was being filmed by the camera changed slightly.

However, it was only for a moment, before Lin Yan raised her foot and continued forward while her assistants and bodyguards pushed the reporters away.

“Ai–! Miss Lin!” The media reporters rushed forward again when they saw that she was about to walk out of the court hall.

Someone shouted in a loud voice, “Miss Lin, why are you so sure that Jin Wexin is not the murderer?”

Lin Yan’s footsteps finally stopped, the corners of her lips twitched with a smile as she pulled the reporter’s microphone close to her face, “Why are you so sure that he is the murderer?”

“This….because of the results of the police investigation…..”

“So did you base your decision on the few photos of the crime scene, the surveillance video that has been cut and edited, or the fingerprints that were found on the knife’s handle?”

She answered back sarcastically and cameras flashed widely at her every word. Everyone stood there speechlessly, but she did not evade their gazes as she met their stares straight on.

“In the end, it was none of that. Instead, everything is based on your wishful thinking. In your eyes, the poor are the only ones worthy of sympathy and compassion while the rich are vicious and merciless people who commit terrible crimes.”

“Women shouldn’t study forensics, men only think with their d*cks and kill people on impulse, and the murderer always kills. You people always…..”

She raised her head and stared straight into the camera. The woman’s eyes were naturally beautiful from birth, her pupils deep and dark, containing a depth one could not see the bottom of. There was more white in her eyes than normal people so it was a little frightening at the first glance.

“Accuse others without evidence.”

Her voice was cold and clear as she spoke. Suddenly there was a loud noise.

Not only was the reporter startled, but even the cameras also froze for a while before the shutters started going off frantically.

At this moment, Lin Yan was about to walk out of the big doors of the court’s entrance while the reporters were chasing after her. There was another crowd of onlookers in front of her. Who knew who was shouting so loudly but a voice suddenly said: “Lin Yan, you helped the killer testify, but have you ever considered the family of the victim? You are not worthy of being a medical examiner! Go to hell!”

When the words were said, it was already too late to stop the person. The reporters were pushed to the side as a person rushed forward.

The bodyguards were also pushed back by the crowd and were a step too late to stop them.

Lin Yan nonchalantly took a step back in her high heels as she casually pulled her assistant by his collar and then pushed him in front of her.

The 180 centimeters tall assistant couldn’t even react before a foul substance poured over his head and slipped all the way down to his feet.

The reporters all pinched their noses and took a step back. Meanwhile, the bailiffs rushed out and tackled the troublemaker to the ground.

Lin Yan frowned in disgust and moved further away. Her bodyguards surrounded her, “Miss, are you alright?”

“I’m fine.” Lin Yan took off the white coat on her body and threw it to them, “Throw this away.”

“Understood.”

Thanks to this troublemaker, no one dared to approach her for fear that the next person to be splashed with dung and feces would be them.

Her assistant wanted to cry as he watched her move away from him. His eyes were red and his body was covered in a foul stench. He cut a very sorry figure in front of this large crowd.

He was about to cry: “Medical Examiner Lin….”

Lin Yan did not turn around as she answered, “You do not have to come into work tomorrow.”

The man felt cold from the top of his head to the tips of his toes. If that dung was replaced with a sharp knife, would Lin Yan have pushed him forward to take the blade in her place as well?

Is a person’s life such an insignificant thing to her?!

If Lin Yan could hear the voice in his heart, she would probably say, “Haven’t you seen enough dead people on the autopsy tables to know?”

Darkness fell on the city and a big black Benz drove quietly down the streets. Lin Yan sat in the back seat, her eyes closed as if she was resting. The city lights glided past the car windows, painting her contemplative face with artificial light.

The butler turned around and whispered quietly, “Miss, the usual?”

She gave an “En” sound that was neither heavy nor light.

The butler is an old hand of the Lin family. He served her father and was later assigned to her. It can be said that he had watched her grow up from a young child to a fine young lady. He looked at the tired look on her face and gently gestured for the driver to drive home.

Lin Yan opened her eyes, “No, I need to go and meet someone.”
